Baker Mayfield will not play in Week 18

The Cleveland Browns will not have the services of their quarterback when they take on the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sunday will be the final game of the season for the Cleveland Browns, but for Baker Mayfield it was Monday’s loss in Pittsburgh. Kevin Stefanski announced Tuesday that Mayfield will not play in Sunday’s contest against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Baker Mayfield is coming off a game where he did not look good and was beat up in the process. With the season over and with no chance to finish above .500 in consecutive seasons for the first time since returning in 1999, there is not a reason for Mayfield to play.

It has been trying season for Baker Mayfield, poor performance and injuries have marred what was a chance to prove he is the long term answer at quarterback for Cleveland. While Mayfield’s struggles can be attributed to his injuries, there is more to it than just that. Mayfield fell back into his bad habits of not reading the field, throwing off platform, and simply panicking in the pocket. All of this combined led to Mayfield making rookie mistakes in year four and the disappointing performance seen for the majority of the season. Mayfield is scheduled to have surgery on his torn labrum some time in January and whether or not he takes the field for the Browns again is yet to be seen.
