Cleveland begins season in Detroit vs. Tigers

The Cleveland Baseball Club will begin the 2021 campaign on the road as they take on the Detroit Tigers.

It’s a new season for the Cleveland Baseball Club and they travel north to Detroit to take on their division rival Tigers. Cleveland finished last season with a 7-3 record against Detroit, including a 6-1 record at Comerica Park. When it came to facing the Tigers in 2020, it was not really much of a contest.

Shane Bieber gets the call for Cleveland in the home opener and the reigning A.L. Cy Young Award winner has dominated Detroit in the past. The Tigers have a slash line of .144/.197/.194/.391 against Bieber in 94 at-bats. The only two players to manage extra-base hits against Bieber are from unlikely sources. Jonathan Schoop has 2 doubles in 13 at-bats and former Cleveland prospect Willi Castro’s only hit is a home run.

Meanwhile, Matthew Boyd will take the mound for the Tigers and Cleveland has been quite successful against. As a team Cleveland slashes .289/.341/.424/.765 in 118 at-bats when facing Boyd. Jose Ramirez has 3 home runs and 1 triple in 32 at-bats and Jordan Luplow has homered twice in 13 at-bats. Newcomer Eddie Rosario is 8-38 with 1 double, 1 triple, and 1 home run.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 P.M. in Detroit at Comerica Park.
