The Chicago White Sox catcher and early season sensation is reportedly stepping away from baseball after posting “it’s over” on Instagram.
After a historic start to his 2021 season, Yermin Mercedes is taking some time away from baseball. Mercedes posted “it’s over” on his instagram in addition to a long caption.
The translation of the caption below his post can be found below.
First of all I want to thank God for giving my life to the fans that without them I was nothing to my family for understanding me and always supporting Daniel szew for getting ahead, and incidentally apologizing to all those who have offended me. immaturity to the members of the radio, television and press .. to all the teams that participated for not tolerating their decisions to everyone who as a human being I have failed I apologize and in this way I am away from baseball indefinitely ..! God bless you ?? it’s over
The post from Yermin Mercedes on his Instagram page
Yermin Mercedes was a force in the White Sox lineup through the first two months of the season, slashing .340/.386/.525 with a .911 OPS 45 games into the season. This included seven doubles, seven home runs, one triple, 29 RBI with a WRC+ of 151. The hot start came to a crashing halt as Mercedes’ performance at the plate cratered over the next 23 games, slashing just .128/.209/.154 and a .363 OPS and a WRC+ of just 7. During this span Mercedes only managed 10 hits in 86 plate appearances with only two going for extra-bases.
Perhaps some time away from the game could lead Yermin Mercedes getting back on track and eventually returning to the major leagues.
