Monsters on quest for second straight win vs Griffins

The Cleveland Monsters are playing host to the Grand Rapids Griffins for the second time in a week.

Just last Saturday the Cleveland Monsters found themselves the victor against the visiting Grand Rapids Griffins. Cleveland defeated Grand Rapids by a score of 4-2 in what was a very chippy game. The Monsters are looking for a repeat performance against their AHL Central Division rival.

A player who played a key role the Monsters will not be available this time around, Kole Sherwood. Sherwood was recalled by the Columbus Blue Jackets and placed on their taxi squad Thursday. It was Sherwood who scored twice in addition to getting into some brawls in the last matchup with the Griffins.

Cleveland has won seven of their last nine games heading in to Friday’s contest while Grand Rapids is 4-4-2 over their last 10. The Griffins has one more point on the season than Cleveland (18-17), but the Monsters hold the advantage in the standings due to games played.

This game could again embody the theme from last Saturday even though Sherwood will not be available for the Monsters. Cleveland will have to lean on some of their other players for goal scoring and perhaps the possible fight. Even thought the Monsters are trending upward lately, they could find themselves just a bit shorthanded when it is all said and done.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.

Monsters reign in purple, defeat Griffins

It was the third annual Purple Game for the Cleveland Monsters with benefits going to The American Cancer Society. Donning their purple jerseys which are put up for auction following the game, Cleveland took down the Griffins 4-2.

Even though there was some Controversy during the game, the Monsters were able to fight through the adversity and come away with a much needed win.

1st Period

A few minutes into the period the Monsters had a 6-5 due to a delayed penalty call. While Cleveland did control the puck for a considerable period, their offensive attack was uninspired. There was zero sense of urgency and they did not seem intent on getting a shot on goal, which they did not. Cleveland’s power play was not much better as while they did attempt some shots on goal, not one had a legitimate chance of finding the back of the net.

A hooking penalty on Ole Bjorgvik-Holm at the 10:36 mark saw Cleveland go on the penalty kill. It did not take long for Grand Rapids to capitalize as Riley Barber got the Griffins on the board about 20 seconds later. Barber got the puck right in front of the net and shot it right past Tarasov with relative ease. The Grand Rapids power play could not have been drawn up any better.

With just 42.1 seconds left to play in the period Grand Rapids doubled their lead. The puck bounced off the skate of Gavin Bayreuther and went just past Tarasov into the net.

Cleveland found themselves in an unenviable situation with 37 seconds left to play in the period. Kole Sherwood was called for tripping while Nathan Gerbe received penalties for misconduct and game misconduct, leaving everyone to ask why do they scream at each other? The Monsters had to make some line swaps due to Gerbe’s hefty penalty. Adam Helewka was inserted into Gerbe’s spot while Carson Meyer took Helweka’s spot.

The shot differential between the two teams was only 1, but the quality of chances for Grand Rapids were significantly better and the 2-0 scoreline at the end of period showed just that.

2nd Period

The Monsters were able to weather the 5-on-3 storm as they did not allow a goal during their two-man deficit. Shortly after returning to full strength, Kole Sherwood slammed Turner Ellson into the boards resulting in a fight. After the brawl both players received five minute penalties for fighting.

Cleveland found themselves the benefactor of Grand Rapids of having too many men on the ice, resulting in a power play for the Monsters. Carson Meyer managed to capitalize on this opportunity as he found the back of the net, cutting the Griffins lead to just 1 at the 15:38 mark. Tyler Sikura and Adam Helewka were credited with assists on Meyer’s goal.

Finding themselves on a power play again the Monsters managed to capitalize for the second time in the period. This time it was Tyler Sikura who would score for Cleveland as they managed to tie the game at 2, a scenario which seemed highly unlikely when the period began. Sikura guided the puck past the goaltender off a shot from Adam Helewka This was the second assist for Helewka in the game, his fifth on the year, with Gavin Bayreuther notching his ninth of the year on the goal.

On a day in which Kole Sherwood chose violence, he decided to get involved in the offensive side of things. Sherwood scored from point blank range as he gave the Monsters a 3-2 lead with 7:24 to play in the period. This was Sherwood’s second goal of the season and was assisted by Ole Bjorgvik-Holm (2) and Luke Moncada (1). This was the first Cleveland goal that did not come on a power play.

With mere seconds left in the period Justin Scott was called for hooking, putting Cleveland on the penalty kill.

3rd Period

Cleveland’s penalty kill went to work and kept Grand Rapids off the board. There was an opportunity early in the period where the Griffins caught the Monsters during a line change, but some excellent defending put an end to the threat.

At the 15:16 mark Kole Sherwood scored his second goal of the game and third of season. Assisting on the goal was Adam Clendening (1) and Josh Dunne (1). This goal came at a perfect time for the Monsters as they extended their lead to two and were putting the pressure on the Griffins to respond.

A Zach Jordan tripping penalty saw the Monsters go on the penalty kill with 5:45 left to play in the game. This was in addition to Gavin Bayreuther’s penalty for fighting he received just moments prior.

With 1:54 left to play it was Kole Sherwood finding his way into another scuffle. His actions essentially said oh no, let’s go. Sherwood received two minutes for cross checking and two minutes for roughing. Considering the score and time left in the game it was a crucial penalty kill for Cleveland. Grand Rapids pulled their goaltender to give them a 6-4 advantage on the ice, but the Monsters were up to the challenge as they stifled their efforts as the game ended with a Cleveland victory.

Grand Rapids held a slight edge in shots on goal during the final period (9-6), with nothing coming of it. The Griffins edge in this area led to Grand Rapids finishing with two more shots on goal than Cleveland for the game (29-27). When all was said and done there were not doves crying in the building.

Game notes

Daniil Tarasov made his AHL debut in net and was extremely impressive. Tarasov saved 25 of 27 shots in his first game with Cleveland and only one goal was truly his fault. The second Griffins goal was more accidental than anything and really cannot be charged to Tarasov. When asked about the goal Tarasov stated that through a translator that “he didn’t care much about it”. Coach Eaves said that it was “unfortunate for him” while adding that it “gives you a looksy into his mental makeup” and it was a “good first impression for sure”.

When asked about the message between the 1st and 2nd periods, coach Eaves said “We wore down playing these guys, not an easy task”. Eaves would later add that the “power play was the igniter”.

Monsters take on Griffins Saturday night

The Cleveland Monsters are looking to extend their current two-game winning streak at home against the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The last time the Grand Rapids Griffins came to town things did not go well for the Cleveland Monsters. Grand Rapids handed Cleveland a pretty definitive 5-2 loss and since then the Monsters are 3-1 including their recent 5-1 win over the Rochester Americans last weekend.

As previously mentioned, the Griffins won the last time they traveled to Cleveland. A combination of the Griffins being a superior team, Cleveland not playing for two weeks, and a last minute goalie decision did not end up well. This time around with the team a bit more fresh and a better idea of who will be in net should at least make things a bit closer.

Griffins right winger Riley Barber is currently 9th in the league with 18 points on the year. Barber’s 11 goals is tied for second in the league with two others. Taro Hirose is the Griffins leaders in assists with 10 in 12 games. Defenseman Joe Hicketts is right on his heels with 9 assists in 15 games.

The goaltending duo of Kevin Boyle and Pat Nagle have been quite formidable for Grand Rapids. There is not much difference in GAA between the two, 2.68 and 2.79 respectively. Same goes for their save percentages, Nagle’s 0.890 just edges out Boyle’s 0.887.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

Monsters lose to Griffins 5-2 at home

Advertisements

Things did not go well for the Cleveland Monsters in their first game in two weeks. Cleveland lost to the Grand Rapids Griffins by a score of 5-2. When asked about the long time between games, Monsters coach Mike Eaves stated that “actually had some good practices”, later adding “but there’s no substitute for playing”. That last quote really hit the mark as far as how the game unfolded.

1st Period

Early in the 1st period the Monsters were able to get into the offensive zone fairly frequently. The issue was that when they were in their defensive zone play would get sloppy and Grand Rapids would gain control of the puck. While the Griffins managed to put pressure on Cleveland, nothing came of it early. However the Monsters were not able to score on three early shots on goal.

With just under nine minutes left in the period the Monsters got on the board with a goal from Dillon Simpson, his third on the year.

Trey Fix-Wolansky and Nathan Gerbe would assist on the goal, both are credited with their sixth assist of the season.

Even though the Monsters held the advantage on the scoreboard after the 1st, it was Grand Rapids who appeared to finding their groove. The Griffins were looking like a well oiled machine over the final few minutes of the period and Cleveland was lucky to come away unscathed. Cleveland did manage to hold a slight advantage in the shots on goal department even after the barrage from Grand Rapids.

2nd Period

The Griffins did not waste any time to tie things up as Givani Smith scored 51 seconds into the period tying the game. Grand Rapids clearly carried the momentum from the end of the 1st period into the 2nd and it showed.

Just a few minutes later the Monsters retook the lead thanks to a slapshot goal from Wyatt Newpower. This was the first goal of the season for Newpower. Tyler Angle and Kole Sherwood assisted on the play, their second and first assist on the season respectively.

This goal was crucial for the Monsters as it slowed down the Griffins momentum. The onslaught that appeared to be on the horizon from Grand Rapids had to be put on hold as they had to regroup and readjust their game plan.

The detour for Grand Rapids didn’t last, with 9:40 left in the 2nd the Griffins managed to tie the game. Givani Smith scored his second goal of the game, this one off a rebound that he put top shelf over Brad Thiessen. There was really no way for Thiessen to stop that goal as it was an impressive effort from Smith.

The Griffins would take their first lead of the game with 4:33 left to play in the period. Chase Pearson was able to score easily on a breakaway as Grand Rapids retook the momentum in the period.

Grand Rapids ended the 2nd period with the lead on the scoreboard and shots on goal. The Griffins were firmly in control and did not plan on relinquishing it. The Monsters only managed 3 shots on goal compared to the Griffins 12. While only a surface number, it is a perfect example why Grand Rapids scored three times in the period.

When asked about the three shots on goal in the 2nd period Mike Eaves stated that “they had ideas about what they wanted to do” and that “they turned the puck over”. Ultimately the inability to convert and keep control of the puck played into the score differential in the period.

3rd Period

Grand Rapids extended their lead to two goals on another goal from Chase Pearson. Pearson was able to take a rebound from a Dominik Shine shot on goal and put it past Thiessen as Grand Rapids firmly took control of the game.

A fight between Dylan McIlrath and Evan Polei broke out 8:46 into the 3rd period, each receiving five minute penalties. The Monsters would find themselves on a power play shortly after, but nothing would come of either moment. In the end the fight did not energize the team as maybe some would have hoped.

The Griffins would score an empty net goal with 1:27 left to play to make it a 5-2 score, ensuring a Monsters loss.

Even though the Monsters were able to attempt double-digit shots on goal in the period, they were not able to make it count.

Notes about the game

Brad Thiessen started in goal for the Monsters, but was not originally supposed to play. Mike Eaves said as much following the game, “Brad came to the rink today thinking he would be in the stands”. Eaves later added that “Brad was calm, showed veteranness”. Considering he saved 23 of 27 shots on goal, that certainly qualifies.

Monsters host Grand Rapids Griffins

The Cleveland Monsters return to action after a two-week break and will play host to the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday night.

Due to circumstances beyond their control, the Cleveland Monsters last played on March 6 in Chicago. After a two week break the Monsters return to action and host the Grand Rapids Griffins at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Cleveland’s 9 points on the year currently has them in 4th place in the AHL Central Division with a 4-3-1 record. The Monsters 8 games played is the fewest in the division, the next lowest being 11 by from Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids is in 3rd place with 14 points (3-2-0) and won the previous two games against the Monsters. Cleveland will be looking for a different result on Saturday.

Riley Barber leads the Griffins in points with 13 on 8 goals and 5 assists. Barber is the leading goal scorer for Grand Rapids while their leader in assists is Taro Hirose with 8. The Griffins split their goaltending duties pretty evenly with Kevin Boyle making 6 appearances and Pat Nagle one less with 5. Nagle ranks 12th in the AHL with a 2.46 GAA and Boyle is 15th with 2.55.

It will be a tough matchup for the Monsters Saturday as Grand Rapids already has defeated them twice on the year. Perhaps Cleveland can turn the tables and extend their winning streak to four straight games while making the losing streak for Grand Rapids three games.

Monsters begin brutal 3,3,3 stretch

Advertisements

This is as brutal as brutal can get. The Cleveland Monsters are about to begin a stretch of three road games, in three days, in three different cities. Cleveland travels to Grand Rapids, Rockford, and Chicago while having Columbus pluck players from their roster along the way. The Blue Jackets are unable to turn to Liam Foudy this weekend due to their NHL-CHL agreement.

This means the Monsters are likely going to provide Columbus with options during their upcoming road trip, providing less options for Mike Eaves to turn to.

Grand Rapids

First stop, Grand Rapids to take on the Griffins. Cleveland absolutely dominated Grand Rapids at home Tuesday in a 6-2 win. The Griffins will without a doubt be seeking revenge. The Monsters will need to do everything they can to avoid falling in a similar fashion that the Griffins did while at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Rockford

Cleveland has faced Rockford three times this season, winning all three matchups.  The Monsters have outscored the IceHogs 15-3 in their three previous games. The only game decided by one goal was December 21st’s matchup in Rockford.

Rockford has 51 points on the season, which puts themselves in 5th place in the AHL’s Central Division. The IceHogs have a negative goal differential this season (-24). Rockford has scored four fewer goals this season while giving up 12 more.

Considering their previous matchups with Rockford and their negative goal differential, Cleveland has quite the opportunity in front of them. It is possible they come away with their fourth straight win against Rockford. Although, the IceHogs could be due for a win and come out victorious against the Monsters.

Chicago

Cleveland has faced Chicago twice this season, both being wins at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. The Monsters scored twice as much as the Wolves in those two games (8-4).

The Wolves have 53 points this season and have given up 11 more goals than they have scored this season. Defense is the name of the game for Chicago. The Wolves have only scored 128 goals this year while surrendering 139. This is the second-fewest amount of goals given up in the division. The only team that has given up less is Milwaukee with 116.

The fact that Chicago is not necessarily the best offense may help a Cleveland team that is prone to giving up goals in bunches. The fact they face teams who have scored fewer goals in each subsequent game in this three day stretch could prove to beneficial when exhaustion inevitably shows up Sunday in Chicago.

Monsters face Griffins in final game of home stand

The Cleveland Monsters finish off their home stand with a matchup with the visting Grand Rapids Griffins before heading out on the road.

One game left in the home stand. That’s it for the Cleveland Monsters before they head out on a two-and-a-half week road trip. Before they leave they have to take on the Grand Rapids Griffins Tuesday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. Cleveland will look to bounce back from Sunday’s disappointing 4-0 loss to Binghamton.

Grand Rapids comes in just a little bit ahead in the points department (51-48), which is good for 4th place in the Central Division. The Griffins are 5-2-1-2 in their past 10 games. Like Cleveland, Grand Rapids has a negative goal differential on the season (-16).

Chris Terry leads Grand Rapids in total points, goals, and assists. Terry has 45 points on the year with 18 goals and 27 assists in 48 games. Looking at the goaltenders for Grand Rapids, Calvin Pickard is their leading goaltender on the year. Pickard has appeared in 28 games with a 2.84 goals against average. Pickard has a save percentage of .904 this season. The only other goalie who has appeared in move than eight games this season is Pat Nagle (11 games). Nagle has a 2.19 goals allowed average with a .922 save percentage.

This will be the first of two matchups in a row with the Griffins for the Monsters as they head to Grand Rapids on Friday.
