Collin Sexton tears meniscus, will miss extended time

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard suffered a torn meniscus in Sunday’s win over the New York Knicks.

It is going to be awhile before Collin Sexton returns to the court for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs guard suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee during Sunday’s win over the Knicks. Sexton is expected to miss an extended amount of time with this injury.

At 16 point per game, Collin Sexton has been the leading scorer for the Cavs this season, but that is not saying all that much. A lot of the Cavs success this season has been through a collective effort and not relying on one specific player. Cleveland can certainly weather the storm without Sexton, but will need others to step up in his absence.

Cavaliers defeat Clippers 92-79

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to come away with a 92-79 win over the shorthanded Los Angeles Clippers.

On the surface the Cleveland Cavaliers 92-79 victory against the Los Angeles Clippers is a bit of surprise. Upon realizing that the Clippers played without Kawhi Leonard, Serge Ibaka, and Marcus Morris it becomes quite less of a shock. The Cavs took advantage of Los Angeles being without three key players and handed them their third loss of the season.

Leading the way for the Cavaliers was Collin Sexton with 26 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Sexton made 12 of 16 field goal attempts from two-point range while missing all four three-point attempts. Not everything about his performance was dynamic as he finished with a season high five turnovers.

Darius Garland was Cleveland’s assist leader with six and second-leading scorer, finishing with 16 points on 5-8 from the floor (2-3 3PT) and making all four free throw attempts. Garland also finished with a season high in turnovers with six.

Evan Mobley struggled from the field, going just 3-10. Mobley did make all six free throws as he finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, the second of his young career.

Ricky Rubio continues to do Ricky Rubio things. Rubio finished with 15 points and three assists in 28 minutes off the bench.

The Cavaliers have now won three straight games and will remain in Los Angeles to face the other tenant in Staples Center, the Lakers, Friday at 10:30 P.M.

Cavaliers collapse in 4th, lose to Charlotte 123-112

The Cleveland Cavaliers were outscored 33-23 in the 4th quarter.

Prior to the 4th quarter the Cleveland Cavaliers were keeping things close with the Charlotte Hornets, one point even holding an 11 point lead. Unfortunately the final quarter was not friendly to the Cavs as they were outscored by 10 points as the Hornets came away with an 11 point victory.

One of the big differences in the game between the two teams was three-point shooting. Charlotte made 13 of their 32 attempts while the Cavaliers only converted nine of 31. The Cavs are not a strong shooting team by any means, but a few more makes and it is possible that this game ends up differently.

Darius Garland did not play in the contest due to an injury and Ricky Rubio took his place in the starting lineup. Rubio had a double-double with 15 points on 10 assists, performing admirably in a spot start.

Collin Sexton led the Cleveland scoring effort with 33 points. Sexton was 13-21 from the field (2-7 3PT) while also having four rebounds, 2 steal, and 1 assist. The issue with this is that the Cavaliers are going to have a hard time winning when Sexton is attempting 21 shots. Something is going to have to change in this area if the Cavs are going to take a step forward in development this season.

The Cavaliers host the Atlanta Hawks in the second game of back-to-back at 6 P.M. Saturday as they look for their first win of the season.

Cavs, Collin Sexton can’t agree on extension

Advertisements

The two sides were not able to reach an agreement on an extension.

The deadline for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Collin Sexton to agree on a rookie-scale contract extension has now passed without a deal. Sexton will be a restricted free agent following the 2021-22 season.

The fact that the Cavs did not come to an agreement on an extension with Collin Sexton is hardly surprising. Sure, Collin Sexton is more than capable of scoring, but does he fit with the other pieces on the roster? Is Sexton even a starting caliber player? From the looks of things Sexton may be better off coming off the bench for a good team as a scoring focused sixth man type rather than a starter on a bad team. Considering where the Cavs are and what their immediate future appears to be, this is not the type of investment they should be making. Perhaps Sexton continues to develop and elevates his game to that next level, but until that happens keeping him in Cleveland for the long term may not be the best idea.

Cavaliers unable to keep pace, lose 109-100

The Cleveland Cavaliers were not up to the task Friday night as they lost to the Indiana Pacers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to come away with a slim victory on the road in Atlanta just a few nights ago and were looking to win their first preseason game at home. Unfortunately for Cleveland it was not their night as the Indiana Pacers handed the Cavs a 109-100 loss.

It is still just the preseason, but there are some concerning trends for the Cleveland Cavaliers at this point. For the third straight game the Cavs turned the ball over 20 (or more) times.  While the Pacers had turnover problems of their own, it was Indiana who capitalized scoring 12 fast break points to just two for Cleveland.

Game notes

It was an abysmal shooting night for Collin Sexton. Sexton scored just 10 points as he made only four of his 15 field goals attempts including 2-4 from three-point range. The Cavaliers guard usually does his fair amount of scoring from the free throw line, but did not attempt a single shot from the charity stripe in his 22 minutes.

Darius Garland did not do much better as he also struggled shooting the ball. Garland was 3-11 (1-5 3PT) and made two of three free throws. In addition to his shooting struggles, Garland did turn the ball over six times compared to just two assists.

Ricky Rubio was the leading scorer for the Cavaliers in the loss. Rubio finished with 14 points n 6-10 shooting while also adding two assists and two steals to his final line.

Dylan Windler was also impressive off the bench, scoring 12 on 4-5 from deep in 22 minutes.

Lauru Markkanen made three of six three-point attempts as he was the third highest scorer (11) for Cleveland in the loss.

The Cavaliers have an off day Saturday before returning to action at home against the Bulls for their fourth preseason game Sunday

Cavaliers edge Hawks 99-96

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to come away with a three-point victory on the road against the Atlanta Hawks.

After a blowout loss the night before, the Cleveland Cavaliers needed to bounce back (even if it is only preseason). The Cavs took on the Atlanta Hawks B-Team and managed to come away with a slight three-point victory. Notable inactive for the Hawks include Trae Young, Lou Williams, Clint Capela, Danilo Galinari, and Bogdan Bogdanovic while the Cavaliers had their full compliment of players available to them.

The preseason is less about the final result and more about individual performances, especially since the Cavs did not face the best players in Atlanta. Looking at how everything sorted out at the end of the game it was a typical performance for most of Cleveland’s players.

Cleveland made 34 of 77 field goal attempts in the contest, including another lackluster shooting night from deep as they went 9-30. For the second straight game the Cavs turned the ball over 22 times, an alarming trend even if it is preseason. Last year the Cavaliers were a turnover prone team and it appears that trait has carried over into 2021-22.

Game notes

Collin Sexton led the scoring effort with 19, needing 17 shots to make seven. Sexton was dreadful from deep, making just two of eight three-point attempts while also missing half of his six free throw attempts. Something to keep an eye on is that through two preseason games Sexton has 12 turnovers to just three assists.

Speaking of assists, Darius Garland finished with a game-high seven while scoring 15 points of his own. Garland was 3-6 from the beyond the arc and made both free throw attempts in the contest. While Garland did turn the ball over four times, it was not more than his assist total.

Dynamic rookie Evan Mobley finished with 12 rebounds, a game-high. Scoring did not come easy, making just four of 11 field goal attempts. Luckily this is still preseason and Mobley needs to feel himself out against other NBA players at this time. Mobley did finish with the highest plus/minus of all Cavaliers starters with +11.

Ricky Rubio led the bench with six assists in 23 minutes while also scoring eight. Rubio appears to have slipped in nicely as the backup point guard on this roster to help the bench unit at least appear to be more of a cohesive unit.

The Cavaliers have a night off Thursday before taking on the Indiana Pacers at home Friday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 P.M.

Cavaliers throttled 131-95 in preseason loss to Bulls

The Cleveland Cavaliers did not get off on the right foot as they were completely dominated by the Chicago Bulls in a 131-95 preseason loss.

Good thing it is only preseason, because it would be an ugly start to the season if this game counted. The Cleveland Cavaliers were simply no match for the Chicago Bulls Tuesday, ending up on the wrong side of a 36-point loss.

As what has become the usual outcome the last few seasons, Cleveland struggled from the field, making just 35.7% (30-84) of their field goal attempts including 30.3% (10-33) from deep. In comparison, Chicago made 46.8% (51-109) and 43.2%(16-37) from three-point range. Even though it is just the first preseason game it does not appear much as changed for the Cavs when shooting the ball.

In addition to the disparity in shooting numbers, turnovers and assists also favored the Bulls. The Cavaliers turned the ball over 22 times to Chicago’s nine and finished with just 21 assists compared to the Bulls 36. Chicago actually had more assists than Cleveland had made field goals, far from an optimal outcome.

Last season the Cavaliers were not a strong offensive unit. Cleveland did not have anyone who could reliably knock down shots consistently and with the way their roster is currently constructed not much has changed.

Game notes

Collin Sexton led the Cavaliers in scoring with 14 as he usually does, but it was on an expected shooting performance. Sexton was 3-9 from the field (2-3 3PT) and made six of eight from the free throw line. This was a typical night from Sexton.

Lauri Markkanen was the second-highest scorer as he has 13 points off the bench, making four of 10 field goals and all four shots from the line.

Ricky Rubio added 10 points of his own as he managed to make just one of his six three-point attempts while assisting on six other baskets.

Evan Mobley was the only other Cavaliers starter to break double-digits, scoring 10 points on a 3-7 shooting night and a perfect 4-4 free throw performance.

The Cavaliers will take on the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday night at 7:30 P.M. for their second preseason game.

Collin Sexton extension on the horizon?

There is reportedly mutual interest between the Cleveland Cavaliers and guard Collin Sexton about a possible contract extension.

Up to this point there has been a relative standoff between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Collin Sexton. Essentially both sides have appeared to be waiting for the other to blink first in order to truly engage in contract discussions without a lot of actual information being made public. There have been rumors of what exactly the Cavs would want to do with Sexton, such as signing him to an extension or trading the young guard. Now there appears to be a genuine public interest from both sides about keeping Sexton in a Cavaliers uniform.

Creating continuity on the roster is the first step for the Cavs to exit the basement of the Eastern Conference and extending Collin Sexton would accomplish that. While establishing continuity is great, there are some questions about exactly what role Sexton should play and whether or not he fits in with the rest of the roster.

Cleveland has made some investments in their roster such as trading for and subsequently extending Jarrett Allen, drafting Evan Mobley, and recently acquiring Lauri Markkanen from the Bulls in a surprising sign and trade deal. There is obviously some belief from the Cavs point of view that these players are franchise cornerstones, whether or not that is true is a different story entirely. Adding Collin Sexton in addition to Darius Garland and Isaac Okoro as their key players creates an interesting dynamic that may not have that high of a ceiling.

The issue with Collin Sexton is that up to this point he has not appeared to be someone to truly build around. While the team construction of the Cavs certainly has not helped him, Sexton appears to be more of a Jordan Clarkson sixth man type than a key player in the starting lineup. While there is nothing wrong with having a good scoring option off the bench, paying a premium for one on a team that has not accomplished much of anything to this point would be quite puzzling. Perhaps Collin Sexton can take that next step forward in his development and become a true starting guard, but a lot needs to happen for that to take place with the current Cavaliers roster not appearing ready to provide adequate help in that area.

Knicks aggressive in pursuit of Collin Sexton

The New York Knicks are reportedly the most aggressive team in pursuit of the Cleveland Cavaliers guard.

As more time passes it appears increasingly likely that the Cleveland Cavaliers will trade Collin Sexton. There has been a fair amount of chatter about the availability of Sexton in the last few days. The latest report from Shams Charania has the New York Knicks being the most aggressive team in pursuit of the Cavs guard.

Considering where the two teams are at this moment in time this would make a ton of sense. The Knicks are looking to get back to the playoffs next season and advance past their first round exit from this past season. Adding Collin Sexton would provide the Knicks with some depth and add another scorer to their mix of guards.

For the Cavs it would allow them to move on from Sexton without having to pay him the high dollar figure extension that many expect him to receive. Cleveland needs to continue shuffling their roster and determining who they should build around and who they should move. It appears as of now that the Cavs have determined their future does not include Collin Sexton, although things could change.

Collin Sexton “very available” in trade talks

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard is “very available” in trade talks according to reports.

This can be filed under two subjects, not surprising and hard to swallow for those who have hard time accepting what a certain Cleveland Cavaliers player is. That player? Collin Sexton. A report from Jason Lloyd of The Athletic (subscription required) has stated that the the former eighth overall pick is available in trade talks. Lloyd was discussing the possibility of moving Kevin Love this summer when Sexton’s name came up.

A deal that might make more sense for the Cavs is bundling Love with Collin Sexton, who I’ve been told is “very available” this summer.

Jason Lloyd on the availability of Collin Sexton

When discussing a the possibility of pairing Kevin Love and Collin Sexton to possibly get Ben Simmons, Lloyd received a response of “no chance; Philly can do better”. That’s a hard pill to swallow for a lot of people who are unable to see the limitations of Sexton and only judge by box scores and refuse to accept the reality of the situation. The reality? He’s not a starter.

The issue when it comes to Collin Sexton is the expected contract extension he could receive versus what he is as a player. Any sort of high dollar figure extension has a very high chance of not working out. Up to this point based off his playing style Sexton appears like he could be a good sixth man for a good team or a starting guard on a really bad team. The fact of the matter is that Cavs are the latter not the former and bad teams should not be in the business of paying high dollar figures to this caliber of player. It would be in the best interest of both parties to go their separate ways this summer.
