Collin Sexton joins rare group in Cavs victory

Advertisements

With his 25 point effort in the Cavaliers 107-102 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Collin Sexton did something that has not been done in over 20 years.

Collin Sexton scored 25 points on 10-18 shooting Wednesday and with that accomplished something that has not been accomplished since Tim Duncan did it in the 1997-98 season. This was the seventh straight game from Collin Sexton scoring 23 or more points. Sexton had to be informed after the game of this accomplishment.

This is an encouraging sign for the Cavaliers moving forward. Scoring 23 points in seven straight games as a rookie is no small feat. There is a reason it has been over 20 years since this last happened. After some early struggles and a decline in performance Collin Sexton is turning things around.

Of course the return of key players and developing chemistry certainly helps. Kevin Love has been absent for the majority of his rookie campaign. Tristan Thompson also missed a significant amount of time. Having other teammates that opponents can key in on defensively certainly takes the pressure off of Sexton.

Collin Sexton is currently converting 42.3 percent of his shots from the field this season. Sexton is nearly as efficient from deep, his 41.8 percent conversion rate has led to his rookie record for three-pointers made that continues to grow as each game passes. Sexton is also making 83.7 percent of his free throws. All of this leads to his 16.2 points per game this season.

There are 10 games remaining this season. This is more than enough time for Collin Sexton to potentially extend his 23+ points scored streak. There is also enough time to continue to develop as a player and end with something to build upon for next season. Sexton appears to have a bright future ahead of him.

Collin Sexton breaks Cavaliers record

Advertisements

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Collin Sexton broke the team record of three-pointers made by a rookie previously held by Kyrie Irving.

It was only a matter of time but Collin Sexton broke the team record for three-pointers made. Sexton has made 76 three-pointers on the year after Friday night’s loss to Miami. The record was previously held by Kyrie Irving. Irving made 73 three-pointers during the 2011-12 season.

As the season progressed it appeared that Collin Sexton was going to claim this record for his own. Sexton is having a good year shooting from deep (38.8 percent) and is making them quite regularly. Add in the fact that this particular Cavaliers team needs scoring help and it was inevitable. Sexton is the third-highest scorer on the team. Second-highest if Kevin Love is excluded. The reason for that being his 50 game absence due to injury. Love’s injury changed the overall look of the team and who needed to scour if the Cavaliers were going to win. While the Cavaliers did not win many games, it did provide Collin Sexton with ample opportunities to score.

There is also the fact that the modern NBA is much different than the NBA of seven years ago. The dependence on the three-ball lends itself to record such as this being broken. There is also the fact that Kyrie Irving only appeared in 51 games as a rookie and Collin Sexton has appeared in 66. One might think that if Irving and Sexton played in the same number of games that Irving could have the advantage in the three-point department.

As the season continues Collin Sexton will add to his Cavaliers team record. There are plenty of chances to do so and the team is not exactly in the playoff hunt. Letting Collin Sexton add to his record over the final 16 games is the right thing to do.

Collin Sexton rebounding after downward trend

Advertisements

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Collin Sexton was trending downward for a couple months, but has now rebounded from his downward trend.

Collin Sexton’s play in the months of December and January were not good. As each month passed Sexton appeared to struggle more and more. Now as the Cleveland Cavaliers head into the All-Star Break, Collin Sexton appears to have rebounded and playing at a much higher level.

In six games in February Collin Sexton is averaging 21.2 points per game. This is on a much improved 41.4 percent from the field, 42.4 percent from deep and 85 percent from the charity stripe. Sexton’s improvement also comes with an increased volume of shots made. Often times an improved percentage is a result of less volume, but this is not the case. Sexton is taking and making more shots in February than any other month. Averaging eight makes on 19.3 shot attempts per game. This includes making 2.3 three-pointers on 5.5 attempts per game.

Collin Sexton is even improving in non-scoring categories. During this recent run, Collin Sexton is averaging 3.5 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game. Both of these are are the highest rate of any month of his career thus far. Sexton also averaged 3.7 rebounds during the month of December. The next highest assist rate was in January with 3.1.

The improvement from Collin Sexton shows a potentially bright future

The ability to rebound from poor performances is one of the more overlooked aspects in sports. Collin Sexton went through a lot of poor performances and finally appears to have rebounded. Rather than continuing a downward spiral, Sexton has been able to bounce back and play at a level that more accurately portrays his talent.

While the Cleveland Cavaliers have only come out victorious in one of the contests, having a rookie point guard in Sexton that has displayed the ability to be a productive starter in the league is a bright spot. It is about the long game for Cleveland and not the immediate results in the standings. As long as Collin Sexton can continue his upward trend, the Cavaliers may have a piece to build around for the future.

Cavaliers Fall to Pacers 105-90 in Indy

The Cleveland Cavaliers, coming off a 119-106 loss to the Wizards Friday night, travelled to Indiana Saturday and again lost, 105-90, to the Pacers, completing an 0-2 back-to-back.

Kevin Love did not see action tonight as he’s not yet cleared to play in back-to-backs, but Brandon Knight played in his first game in a Cavalier uniform and scored 9 points on 3-3 shooting. Let’s get into it all.

Again, Kevin Love sat the second half of the back-to-back out, meaning Marquese Chriss got the start in just his second game with the Cavaliers. Brandon Knight, aquired in the trade with Houston that sent Chriss, Knight, and a first round pick to Cleveland, also made his Cavalier debut.

Cavaliers were unable to overcome fast start from Pacers

Myles Turner and the Pacers got off to a fast start, as Turner scored 10 of their first 14 (including two threes) as the Pacers jumped out to a quick 14-7 lead. The Cavaliers really struggled offensively in the first, trailing 30-17 after one.

Brandon Knight came off the bench for the first time in a Cavalier uniform early in the second, and provided an immediate boost, knocking down two quick three pointers. He would go on to finish with 9 points on 3-3 shooting, every shot from three. The Cavaliers would still trail at halftime, 54-42, as Sexton scored 11 in the first two periods. The third was much of the same, as the Pacers stretched the lead out to as big as 18. A little run by the Cavs cut it to 11, but it wouldn’t get much better than that.

Indiana managed to maintain their lead through the fourth quarter, and held on for a 105-90 win at home over the Cavaliers. Bojan Bogdanovic lead the way for the Pacers, scoring 23, while the Cavs attack was lead by Jordan Clarkson, who dropped 18 off the bench and continues to be one of the league’s top bench scorers, while Sexton and Nance scored 16 each. Nance added 10 rebounds.

Young Bull experiences dropoff

After scoring 27 in each of the last two games, Collin Sexton followed up with a 16 point, 5 rebound, 4 assist performance, which still beats his season average in all three.

For my taste, Sexton was too hesitant to attack tonight. He continues to knock down the threes, making all three tonight, but didn’t attack as much as I’d like. Hopefully he continues to attack the rim going forward, as we talked about in last night’s recap.

Injury Report

  • John Henson is still out with a wrist injury.
  • Kevin Love, after returning from a 50-game absence last night, sits out the second half of the back-to-back
  • Cedi Osman continues to miss time with an ankle injury. The Cavaliers hope he can return to the lineup soon.

Cavaliers Fall to Wizards 119-106

Cleveland Cavaliers were unable to defeat the Washington Wizards despite Kevin Love’s Return 27 points from Collin Sexton.

After missing 50 games due to a toe surgery, Kevin Love’s return made all the headlines for the Cavaliers’ game against the Wizards Friday night. However, there’s much more to be said about Cleveland’s 119-106 loss to Washington. Love only played the first 6 minutes; he’s fine, it was all part of the plan. Meanwhile, Collin Sexton continues excellent play with 27 points and Clarkson added 24 off the bench. Let’s get into it all.

Kevin Love’s Return

Kevin Love, as we mentioned, got the start and played the first six minutes. Lobe started out aggressive, getting the ball in the post on the first play and drawing a foul, knocking down both free throws. He went on to miss his next three shots, all three-pointers, before again posting up and making a tough inside shot through contact. He missed an inside fadeaway for his final shot, and then exited the game for the night with four points.

This is all part of the plan with Love. With the Cavaliers being where they are, there’s no reason to rush him back. He played six minutes to try to get some of the feel back of playing in an NBA game. He’ll also be held out of tomorrow’s game against the Pacers as he’s not cleared to play in back-to-backs yet.

Recapping the Rest of the Game

Anyhow, after Love exited, the Wizards, and particularly Bobby Portis, caught fire. The team dropped 41 on the Cavs in the first quarter and lead 41-27 after one. Cleveland managed to stabilize things in the second, tying Washington 25-25 and trailing by 14 at halftime, behind 14 from Sexton.

The Wizards got off to a fast start in the third, quickly taking a 20-point lead. The Cavaliers weren’t done, however. An 18-3 run lead by Jordan Clarkson and the rebounding/passing of Larry Nance Jr. cut the lead to just five. It would go on to be close throughout the rest of the third, with the Wizards extending the lead back to 12 but the Cavs cutting it back to 3. Cleveland was trailing 92-86, heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter was pretty disappointing for Cavs fans. the Wizards couldn’t pull away, but the Cavaliers couldn’t make that run. The Wizards ended up winning, 119-106, at home.

There were still multiple positives in this game for the Cavaliers. The new addition Marquese Chriss dropped 13 points and 8 rebounds, knocking down 3 of 5 threes on 5/10 shooting overall. He’s only 21 years old and the Cavaliers hope to keep the athletic big man long term. Jordan Clarkson and David Nwaba both had great games, with Clarkson dropping 24 off the bench and Nwaba scoring 17 points and 8 rebounds while playing great defense. And of course, Collin Sexton scored 27 points for the second straight game and continues to attack the hoop.

How has Sexton improved the last two games?

These last two games, Collin has no longer shied away from contact and settled for jump shots. He’s been doing what he did best in college – attack the rim and seek contact. This is a great sign for the Young Bull. So far this year, Sexton has been hesitant at the rim and tried to avoid contract. Now, he’s using his body, scoring through contact, or drawing fouls (where’s he’s been excellent at the charity stripe). His overall aggressive nature in the last two games is what we’ve wanted to see from Collin all year, and now we’re finally getting it, and getting results too. He’s scored 27 points in each of the last two games.

Another thing I saw from Sexton, particularly against the Wizards, is that he’s starting to use his speed. Twice, I saw him take it coast to coast in a blur of speed and beat everyone to the rack. His speed is one of his most valuable assets and if he can do a better job of using it to his advantage, look out. These are all great signs from the Young Bull and he’s starting to develop into what Koby Altman and the Cavaliers’ envisioned when selecting him 8th overall in the 2018 draft.

Injury Report

  • Cedi Osman continues to miss time with that ankle injury. He’s unlikely to return tomorrow against the Pacers but will hopefully return very soon and continue his excellent stretch.
  • Cavaliers newcomer Brandon Knight, who came over in the Chriss trade, is still rehabbing from surgery but also hopes to return to the lineup very soon.
  • John Henson is still out with a wrist injury. There hasn’t been much word on him lately, which means he’ll be out for a little while longer.

Cavaliers Fall to Celtics Despite 27 From Sexton

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers faced off against the Boston Celtics Tuesday night in Cleveland. Despite Collin Sexton falling 2 short of his career high with 27 points, they take the tough loss by a final score of 103-96.

Stats via ESPN

The Cavaliers put up a surprigingly good game against the 35-19 Celtics, despite them missing Kyrie Irving, leading 30-28 after one. A Terry Rozier buzzer-beating three pointer would put Boston up 59-51 at halftime, but the Cavs weren’t going away, cutting the lead to six, 85-79, entering the fourth. Boston lead most of the way throughout the game and the entire fourth quarter, but Alec Burks was big late and the Cavs were able to make it a 101-96 game with a little over 2:00 to go. Cleveland would not score again, however, and Boston held on for a 103-96 tough road victory. Collin Sexton scored a game-high 27 points, while second-year standout Jayson Tatum lead the way for Boston, scoring 25.

Collin Sexton’s hot start not enough for Cavaliers

Sexton was great right from the start, starting off the game with three aggressive drives to the basket before hitting a three to cap off a 9-point first quarter. He scores 9 more in the second, hitting another three and continuing to play aggressive. More of the same in the third quarter, scoring 9 more points and totaling 27.

Collin, however, did not score in the fourth quarter and was not able to reach his career high of 29 points. He continues to show flashes of being great but, again, proves to be inconsistent. He went 0-5 from the field in the fourth quarter, and finished the night with totals of 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, on 11-24 shooting (3-7 from three).

While Sexton played a big role in keeping the Cavaliers in the game, Alec Burks also had a big night. Burks totaled 21 points and was huge down the stretch offensively, making a couple of clutch plays late and scoring the Cavalier’s last five points. Burks is the most obvious potential trade target on this Cavalier roster, and surely boosted his stock with this great performance.

Larry Nance Jr. chipped in 11 and 7 off the bench. Zizic, Nwaba, and Delly scored 8 apiece, but the Cavalier’s leading scorer Jordan Clarkson had an offnight, putting up only 7 points on 2-13 shooting (1-7 from three)

Performances from Collin Sexton trending downward

Advertisements

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Collin Sexton has been trending downward in regards to on-court performance since November

Collin Sexton has endured a rough rookie season. The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the worst teams in the league and Sexton is being tasked with leading a relatively uninspiring unit. Besides playing for a team with an awful record, Sexton experienced his worst month since turning pro.

In the month of January Collin Sexton only made 36.2 percent of his shots. In fact Sexton’s field goal percentage has dropped in consecutive months. From 45 percent in November to 40.2 percent in December and now 36.2 percent in January. This drop in efficiency is not a good trend for the Cavaliers rookie.

Coinciding with Sexton’s drop in field goal percentage, points scored per game have also dropped in three straight months. Sexton scored 16.1 points in November, 14.8 points in December and now 13.3 points in January. These numbers are hardly encouraging and quite a cause for concern.

A drop in minutes per game could hypothetically be to blame, (31.3 minutes in November, 30.7 in December, 29.5 in January), however just under two minutes less per game is hardly to blame for such a sharp drop in performance quality.

Collin Sexton may be a victim of circumstances in Cleveland

To put it bluntly the Cleveland Cavaliers are a bad team. The team has also dealt with injuries to key players several times this season. Kevin Love has been out since the fourth game of the season. Tristan Thompson has suffered two injuries which have kept him out for an extended period of time. With the team lacking veteran experience it is quite difficult for Sexton to not head into a negative direction.

It is not entirely out of the question to consider that if Love and Thompson have not missed as much time as they have that Sexton could be playing better. While the team has benefited from quality play from Jordan Clarkson, Rodney Hood and Alec Burks, they can only do so much from the guard position. Ante Zizic has played fairly well, but his contributions have come in spurts and has not really impacted Sexton in a positive manner.

Collin Sexton is an unfinished product and has a lot of time ahead of him as an NBA player. Sexton is also only 20 years old and will develop as his career progresses. Cleveland surrounding Sexton with more quality players will also help his development. Of course that is if they select the right players and not draft the wrong players.

Will Collin Sexton’s downward slide continue? Probably not. Although the downward trend is concerning. The best practice for the time being is patience and allowing the rookie to learn from his mistakes.

Recent struggles of Collin Sexton

Advertisements

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Collin Sexton has struggled with some poor shooting performances over the last 10 games.

Dating back to December 18th Collin Sexton has struggled offensively. In the 10 game span Sexton is only converting 33.3 percent of his shots from the field. The best single game performance was in the lone victory in that span against the Indiana Pacers. Sexton went 6-13 from the field and scored 12 points in the contest. This mark is nearly eight percent worse than his season average of 41.7.

Shooting from deep has also been a tough task. Sexton is shooting an uninspiring 34.6 percent from beyond the arc during this recent slide. Sexton’s best night from three-point range occurred in a 26 point loss to the Utah Jazz. The now 20-year old rookie made three of four attempts that evening, but shot 3-13 overall ending with 13 points overall.

While Sexton has improved his three-point shooting over the last three games, he is still inconsistent in that regard. The 53.8 conversion rate in January is encouraging but considering his season average is only at 38.8 percent a correction is coming.

Shooting is not the only concern with Collin Sexton

The other concern is that Collin Sexton is only averaging 3.3 assists over this span. While there have been two games where Sexton has tallied six assists, Sexton has only cracked the three assist barrier one other time. While some of this is due to the lack of reliable shooters on the floor, the other factor is Sexton making rookie mistakes. Often times making poor passes or not finding open teammates. Eventually this should correct itself, but for now the struggles appear likely to continue.

Collin Sexton has had some moments this season where he has looked great, but it has not occurred in quite some time. Patience will be key in his development. Sexton will improve with more time and show the occasional flash that led to the Cavaliers selecting him with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Collin Sexton and his early season struggles

Advertisements

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Collin Sexton is not exactly playing at a high level. While it is unfair to throw him away and declare him a bust (some have), evaluating his performance thus far is a more than fair process.

In 11 games Collin Sexton is shooting 42 percent from the field. This includes a relatively unimpressive 33.3 percent from deep. While he only attempts just over one there-pointer per game it would be good to see his success rate increase in the future. On the other hand Sexton is attempting eight two-point shots per game. On shots of this variety Sexton is converting 43.2 percent of the time.

The main issue with Sexton on offense is that most of his shot attempts are from mid-range. A whopping 37 percent of Sexton’s shots come from two-point shots that are 16 feet or more from the basket. Sexton is making only 35.1 percent of these attempts, this only adds to the problem. Shots from this part of the court are widely considered poor. This is due to the relative low success rate and the fact that a step or two further back provides three points instead of just two.

Defensive issues

Coming out of college Collin Sexton had issue defending the pick and roll. Those issues are still prominent now that he is in a Cavaliers uniform. This is not the only issue Sexton has had this season on defense.

Sexton’s overall plus/minus is quite poor, currently at -78. This is the third-worst plus/minus for the Cavaliers this season. The only players with a worse number are Cedi Osman and Jordan Clarkson.

Sexton’s defensive liability also shows up in his defensive rating per 100 possessions. With Sexton on the court Cleveland gives up 120 points per 100 possessions, this is the worst number on the Cavaliers among players who see regular playing time. The only player with a worse defensive rating is John Holland who only played one minute in one game. The issue with a defensive rating this poor is that the team is only scoring 98 points per 100 possessions. The team is being outscored by 22 points per 100 possessions with Sexton on the court. This is a huge problem.

Can Collin Sexton improve?

Well of course Collin Sexton can improve. Sexton is only 20 years old and 11 games into his rookie season. The fact the Cavaliers are a bad team is certainly not helping his overall performance. With George Hill out for a few games, Sexton has the chance to improve his performance with an uptick in playing time. With how bad the Cavaliers have been this season they might as well start Sexton the remainder of the season. Give Sexton the chance to improve through more time on the court, evaluate which players to build around and who can be traded away. The Cavaliers need to improve somehow and giving Sexton more time on the court will only benefit all parties involved.

Cavaliers win preseason opener vs Celtics

Advertisements

In the grand scheme of things NBA preseason games do not mean much of anything. That being said, it is good to see a team play well in preseason opener. That is just what the Cleveland Cavaliers did on Tuesday, defeating the Boston Celtics 102-95.

Positives

Kevin Love appears to be ready to be the main man in Cleveland. With a team-high 17 points on 5-10 from the field, including 2-3 from deep. Love also went 5-7 from the charity stripe. The Cavaliers big man also grabbed four rebounds in his 17 minutes of playing time.

Cedi Osman drew the start and did not disappoint, scoring 11 points on 5-10 shooting and making both free throw attempts in 19 minutes. In addition to his scoring output, Osman had seven rebounds and four assists.

Rodney Hood put together a nice performance, chipping in 10 points on 3-6 from the field including making his lone three-point attempt. Hood also had one assist, steal and block in the contest.

Jordan Clarkson made five of his eight attempts from the field for 12 points off the bench. Clarkson made the only three-pointer he attempted and went 1-2 from the free throw line. Clarkson also had two rebounds and three assists.

Rookie point guard Collin Sexton scored 15 points on 5-11 shooting with four rebounds and one assist. Sexton attempted three shots from deep making two and made all three attempts from the free throw line.

Newcomer David Nwaba had an impressive scoring performance, going 4-5 on the night for 12 points.

The Cavaliers starters only played during the first half Tuesday. When on the court Cleveland did outscore Boston 59-40.

Negatives

To put it lightly George Hill was abysmal from the field. Hill missed all five shot attempts and did not assist on any of his teammates baskets. As the starting point guard this is a problem. Hill will need to improve his shooting and start setting up his teammates to score. If not Sexton could overtake him sooner rather than later.

The aforementioned Nwaba managed a -7 in plus/minus on the evening, the second-worst of any of the Cavaliers on the night. The only Cleveland player with a worse mark was Kobi Simmons with -8.

Speaking of Simmons, he went 1-6 from the field in 13 minutes. This is not necessarily a good performance, but to be fair he will probably not make the roster.

Kyle Korver went 0-3 from the field, missing his only three-point attempt. Korver will need to make his three-point attempts if he is going to be beneficial to the Cavaliers or any other team this season.

In the second half Cleveland was outscored 55-43 but were still able to pull away with the victory.
