Jarrett Allen could return within three weeks

After an initial undetermined return timeline, the Cleveland Cavaliers got some clarity in regards to Jarrett Allen. Shams Charania of The Athletic had the following update about Allen.

Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen is hopeful of a return to the lineup within the next three weeks after suffering a fractured left finger on March 6, sources said. Allen has so far resisted surgery on the finger, which would have had a lengthy return timetable. The Cavaliers have 11 games left in the season.

With Cleveland entering the home stretch over the next few weeks, they will need to make preparations of the remainder of the season and postseason. Having a possible return timeline for Allen allows them to do just that.

Dean Wade likely out 3-4 weeks

The Cleveland Cavaliers are going to be without forward Dean Wade for an extended period of time with a partial meniscus tear. Wade could be out for 3-4 weeks, testing the Cavs depth even further.

Dean Wade is averaging 5.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1 assist per game in 19.2 minutes per game. Wade ranks 10th in minutes of active Cavs players at this moment. Various injuries to Cleveland’s big men have led to Wade being called on for a larger role and his absence will lead to others picking up the slack. When Wade does return it will give the Cavaliers a player who has turned into a valuable bench player.

Cavaliers secure first .500 or better season without LeBron since 1997-98

With their 113-109 win over the Detroit Pistons Saturday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers have clinched their first .500 season without LeBron James since the 1997-98 season. Their latest victory puts the Cavs at 41 wins on the season, a number that few expected this team to reach this season. Expectations for Cleveland were not high as they have mostly stumbled in their second post-LeBron era. This breakout has to promise for the long term future of this team while providing excitement currently.

Interestingly enough when the Cavs have the opportunity to go above .500 this season, they also have the chance to secure a below .500 record the team they are matched up against, the Lakers. Los Angeles has 41 losses on the season, clinging to their hopes for the play-in tournament. The fact that the Cavaliers can secure a winning season while handing the Lakers a losing one on the same night presents quite the interesting back drop to their late season matchup. Cleveland clinching a winning record without LeBron on the roster for the first time in nearly a quarter century with a win against James’ Lakers would be incredibly poetic.

Caris LeVert out for Cavs in Miami

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without Caris LeVert Friday night in Miami as he continues to miss time due to injury. This will be the eighth straight game that LeVert has missed.

Caris LeVert has played just four games for Cleveland since being acquired prior to the trade deadline. LeVert is averaging 13.3 points in 31 minutes on 39.7% from the field in those games.

LeVert, Allen out for Cavaliers Tuesday

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without both Caris LeVert and Jarrett Allen when they take on the Indiana Pacers Tuesday. Allen is out indefinitely with a fractured finger and LeVert is still working his way back from a foot sprain.

This is not the first time this season that the Cavaliers have taken on the Pacers without a key player. The Cavs have won both previous contests with Indiana this season without Darius Garland. Luckily Garland is available this time around which gives Cleveland a good chance of winning their third straight against the Pacers.

Jarrett Allen out indefinitely

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without their center for an undetermined amount of time.

It was a much needed win for the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday night, but they did not come away unscathed. Jarrett Allen only played 10 minutes after leaving early with a quad injury. It was later reported that Allen has an additional injury, a fractured finger which will sideline him indefinitely.

This is a big blow for Cleveland as Jarrett Allen has been a key player for the Cavs this season. Allen is averaging 16.1 points and 10.8 rebounds in 56 games this season, both career-highs. The Cavs are teetering on the line between playoff and play-in, currently trying to correct the course of their recent skid. Being without Allen indefinitely will make the tough March schedule that much harder and could impact where they end up in the final standings.

Cavaliers to be shorthanded (again) in Philly

The Cleveland Cavaliers will find themselves shorthanded when they head to Philadelphia.

At a time when the Cavaliers find themselves in the midst of a disappointing stretch of play, they will find themselves shorthanded yet again for Friday’s tilt in Philly. Cleveland will be without Caris LeVert and Dylan Windler with the possibly that Rajon Rondo also misses the contest.

This is far from ideal and the Cavaliers need to straighten things out sooner rather than later. The playoffs are not that far away and they have been limping for some time now. If the Cavs want to put up any sort of fight they need to get right and that starts with getting healthy. While big picture says not to fret over one game, trying to get LeVert accustomed to playing with his new teammates will be a priority considering he has only played four games with Cleveland after being acquired prior to the trade deadline.

Recent Cavaliers skid a cause for concern

The Cleveland Cavaliers have lost five of their last six games, prompting questions about the rest of their season.

Entering the All-Star Break, the Cleveland Cavaliers were the darlings of the NBA. Even after losing two straight games ahead of the break they were still looked upon favorably. Cleveland had surpassed all realistic expectations for this season, receiving compliments from even the most surprising individuals. The LeBron James return 2.0 rumors started again with mixed reactions from the fanbase. Now the Cavs have lost five of their previous six games and that is a cause for concern.

While Darius Garland has missed three of the six games they have played during that span, his absence is not the sole reason the team has lost. In fact, the lone win during this stretch came without Garland and Caris LeVert for that matter. The Cavaliers most recent loss Wednesday was a gigantic gut punch. Cleveland saw the return of Garland after a short absence but ended up losing by 21 points to a Charlotte Hornets team that only saw eight minutes of play from LaMelo Ball due to foul trouble.

The drop off in defensive play has been a troubling trend as of late. The Cavaliers have allowed 115.8 points in their five losses, nearly 13 points more than their season average. If the Cavs offense was able to keep up it would be a bit different, but they are right on their season average of 106.5 points per game (106 over this span).

While the absences of some key players do matter (Garland, LeVert, Rajon Rondo, Ricky Rubio, Collin Sexton), it may be time to acknowledge that this Cavaliers team overachieved this season. This is a very young team that is exciting and has key foundational pieces in place. There were no expectations for this team and the fact they exceeded even some of the loftiest most optimistic projections had everyone excited.

That being said there is a learning curve and overall talent gap when it comes to depth. Cleveland still sits in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, but after the All-Star Break is when the season really begins. There are just 10 games left in the season and the Cavs are a near lock to be in some sort of postseason play. Their post regular season campaign may be shorter than expected after their early season surge. In the big picture and over the long haul that is more than fine, but as far as this season is concerned it may be time to temper expectations.

Cavaliers: Mobley, Okoro on Rising Stars game roster

Cleveland Cavaliers youngsters Evan Mobley and Isaac Okoro have been named to the Rising Stars game roster.

Mobley is averaging 14.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.7 blocks in 43 games this season. Meanwhile in 36 games, Okoro has averages of 9.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. Both players have been contributors to why the Cavaliers have been the most surprising team in the NBA this season. Participating in the Rising Stars game in during the All-Star festivities in Cleveland this year will give them the chance to appear on the radar of those yet to notice them.

Cavaliers narrowly defeat Pelicans 93-90

The shorthanded Cleveland Cavaliers needed all hands on deck in order to just barely come away with a three-point win.

Cleveland was faced with the reality of playing without one of their best players in Darius Garland as he was held out with back soreness. This led to an unconventional staring lineup featuring Cedi Osman, Isaac Okoro, Dean Wade, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. It was tough sledding going for both sides early as New Orleans held a 19-17 lead after the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter was not much better as the Cavaliers trailed 39-38 at the half. It was the second half which provided a lot more intrigue.

Both offenses apparently remembered how to score as they combined for 106 points in the final two quarters. The 3rd quarter was just a slight improvement for the Cavaliers, scoring just one more point in the 3rd than the 2nd (22-21). It was the 4th quarter which the lid finally came off for the Cavs as they poured in 33 points in the quarter and managed to come all the way back to take the lead thanks to some clutch free throws from Isaac Okoro and Lamar Stevens. The three free throws made by this duo was ultimately the difference in the contest as the Cavaliers went on to win 93-90.

Propelling the Cavs to victory was the unexpected performance of Brandon Goodwin. Not appearing the 1st quarter, Goodwin would go on to score 21 points on 8-11 from the field with 12 coming in the 4th quarter. It is highly unlikely that the Cavaliers would be able to come back and win this game without the efforts of Goodwin. It is these types of performances which separate the wheat from the chaff in professional sports, Goodwin’s night is the type of outing which separates playoff teams from the afterthoughts.

Cleveland will have Tuesday off after back-to-back games and will travel to Houston to take on the Rockets Wednesday at 8:00 P.M.
