Cleveland out-homered by White Sox

Cleveland Baseball Club pitching surrendered four home runs to the bats of the Chicago White Sox in an 8-5 loss on Tuesday.

The good news, Cleveland managed to get some hits off of White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon. The bad news, Chicago pummeled Cleveland’s pitching in what ended up as an 8-5 loss.

Zach Plesac was the pitcher for Cleveland and while he did pitch better than last time, it still was not great. Plesac gave up 6 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings. The White Sox were not fooled by what Plesac had to offer and simply made him pay. Tim Anderson and Jose Abreu both homered twice off of Pleasc, both solo shots. Abreu would homer later off of Sam Hentges while Yasmani Grandal sent a Cal Quantrill pitch into the stands.

Cleveland’s offense kept things a bit more competitive in this go around as it was only a one-run game through 4 innings. Cleveland did cut into Chicago’s late in the game, but by then it was too late. The issue for Cleveland continues to be a lineup that is failing to get hits. There are only two regulars hitting above .260 on the year and that is a huge problem. It is still early in the season and plenty of time to turn it around, but this not necessarily murderer’s row that is getting put out that each and every day.

Cleveland has a chance to take the second and final game of the series Wednesday, weather permitting.

Cleveland takes on visiting White Sox

The Cleveland Baseball Club is poised to take on the Chicago White Sox at home in a two game series starting Tuesday at 6:10 P.M.

In their last matchup it was the Cleveland Baseball Club taking the final game against the White Sox in Chicago. That will not be the focus of Tuesday’s game. The focus will be how Cleveland’s lineup adjust to facing Carlos Rodon who no-hit the club last week. This is Rodon’s first start since the no-hitter and Cleveland will get a chance for revenge.

Zach Plesac will start for Cleveland and he will be looking for a rebound start Tuesday. Plesac was the starter against Rodon and was hit hard early in the game. The White Sox knocked Plesac out in the 1st inning after allowing 6 runs on 7 hits in just two-thirds of an inning. Based off of Plesac’s career his past indicates he is a significantly better pitcher than that performance. Cleveland will need Plesac to pitch his best to put the team in position to win.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 P.M. at Progressive Field.

Cleveland splits series with 4-2 victory

The Cleveland Baseball Club was able to split their four-game series against the Chicago White Sox with Thursday’s 4-2 win.

After being no-hit the night before, the Cleveland Baseball Club needed a rebound performance in the worst way. Thursday’s afternoon matchup with the Chicago White Sox provided the bounce back they needed as they ended up with 8 hits leading to 4 runs in their two-run victory.

Aaron Civale was the Cleveland starter, pitching significantly better than Zach Plesac in the previous game. Civale would allow only 1 run on 5 hits in addition to striking out 4 in 6 innings of work.

Cleveland found themselves down 1-0 early and it took a little bit for the team to respond, but they did in a big way. Jose Ramirez came up to bat in the 6th and promptly launched a two-run homer to give Cleveland the lead. Two more runs would come across in the 7th and 8th innings as Cleveland’s lead grew to three.

Emmanuel Clase would come on in the 9th to end the game and it was not an easy inning. Clase would allow a leadoff triple to Luis Robert who would come around to score on an error with the run being ruled unearned. An Adam Eaton fly out would end the game with the tying run on base to secure the Cleveland win.

It wasn’t all smiles as White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton got into an altercation with Andres Gimenez in the 1st inning. Eaton apparently was not a fan of the tag placed on him as he was thrown out at second base. The benches would clear temporarily with order being restored and the game continuing.

Cleveland’s road trip continues as the Ohio Cup begins Friday in Cincinnati.

Aaron Civale starts in final game against White Sox

The Cleveland Baseball Club turns to the 25-year old right hander as they look to split the series with the Chicago White Sox.

The Cleveland Baseball Club is in need of a bounce back in the worst way. Wednesday night saw the team get no hit by Carlos Rodon of the Chicago White Sox and the low end of their season should have been met with that performance. While Cleveland is looking for their offense to improve Thursday they will be entrusting Aaron Civale as their staring pitcher in their final game in Chicago.

Aaron Civale has been lock solid through his first two starts this season. Civale is sporting an ERA of 2.45 and WHIP of 0.545 in in 14.2 innings this season. These numbers are more similar to his rookie campaign than his 12 starts in 2020. It is worth mentioning that Civale faced Detroit in consecutive starts and they do not have the talent of Chicago. Chicago’s two key bats in their lineup have mixed results against the Cleveland starter in the past. Jose Abreu is 2-12 with 1 double and Yoan Moncada is 5-11 with 1 double.

The White Sox are turning to Lance Lynn for this third start of the season. Lynn has been lights for Chicago as he is yet to allow a run in 13.2 innings of work. Last time out for Lynn was a complete game shutout of the Kansas City Royals, allowing 5 hits and striking out 11 with no walks. Lynn has dominated the Cleveland lineup in the past and there is reason to believe that will continue Thursday. As a team Cleveland is slashing .126/.161/.188/.349 with 1 home run, 1 double, and 10 strikeouts in 39 at-bats. Both extra-base hits belong to Jose Ramirez who is 2-8 off Lynn.

First pitch is at 2:10 P.M. at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Cleveland gets no hit in Chicago

The Cleveland Baseball Club was no hit by Chicago White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon in a lopsided 8-0 loss at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Major League Baseball has its second no-hitter of 2021. Carlos Rodon absolutely dominated the Cleveland Baseball Club lineup with 7 strikeouts in his 9 innings of work. In fact, Rodon was 8 and 1/3 of an inning into a Perfect Game until he hit Roberto Perez in the Top of the 9th. The hit batter did not impact Rodon as he finished off the no-no.

For Cleveland, Zach Plesac was their starting pitcher and it did not go well. Plesac was not able to get out of the 1st inning, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits including a three-run homer from Yermin Mercedes. Even when Plesac left the game in the 1st Chicago was still able to score. Tyler Stephan relieved Plesac and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.

Other arms in the Cleveland bullpen were able to keep the White Sox off the scoreboard later in the game. Phil Maton, Cal Quantrill, Oliver Perez, and Bryan Shaw combined for 5.1 innings of work, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks.

Cleveland will look to split the series Thursday in Chicago at 2:10 P.M.

Zach Plesac gets the call Wednesday vs White Sox

The Cleveland Baseball Club will call upon the young pitcher to start their third game against the Chicago White Sox.

Game 2 of the series provided a better result for the Cleveland Baseball Club than Game 1. Shane Bieber was able to dominate the White Sox in a 2-0 win at Guaranteed Rate Field. In search of their second straight win, Cleveland will hand the ball over to Zach Plesac Wednesday.

Zach Plesac has been impressive in his first two starts of the season. Compiling a 1.38 ERA, 0.846 WHIP, and a low 6.9 K/9. Plesac will be looking to build upon his last start where he allowed 3 hits in 7 innings against Detroit. Some key bats for the White Sox do not have a good track record against Zach Plesac. Jose Abreu is 2-11 with 3 strikeouts, Yoan Moncada is 3-12 with 4 strikeouts, Luis Robert is 1-6 with 3 strikeouts, and Yasmani Grandal is 1-9 with 5 strikeouts. Plesac has shown the ability to strike out the better bats in the White Sox lineup and will to continue that in this start.

Chicago’s starter is Carlos Rodon. Rodon was originally the starter for Game 1 of this series and was a late scratch due to not feeling well. Dallas Keuchel relieved Rodon of his duties and pitched well enough to hand Cleveland a loss. As it was the other day, the key is Jose Ramirez. Ramirez is Cleveland’s best hitter against Rodon and will hopefully continue that good history.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 P.M. at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Shane Bieber dominates in 2-0 Cleveland win

The Cleveland Baseball Club pitcher shut down the Chicago White Sox with 11 strikeouts over 9 innings in a 2-0 victory.

Looking for a bounce back victory, the Cleveland Baseball Club turned to Shane Bieber and it paid dividends. Bieber was one half of an incredible pitcher’s duel with Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito. Fans of excellent pitching definitely sat back and enjoyed themselves over the course of this game.

Shane Bieber was absolutely dominant in his third start of the season and was able to secure his first victory of the season. Bieber struck out while allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings of work. The reigning Cy Young Award winner basically threw a complete game shutout while adding to his major league leading strikeout total.

The only real problem for the Cleveland Baseball Club was their offense was just down by Lucas Giolito. Giolito lasted 7 innings and kept Cleveland in check with 3 hits, 2 walks, and 8 strikeouts. As mentioned above, this was a great duel between two great pitchers.

Things changed when the game went to extra-innings. In the top of the 10th things got started with Josh Naylor reaching on an infield single. This would allow Franmil Reyes to go to third on an error. With 1 out in the inning, Roberto Perez would also reach on an infield single, allowing Reyes score and giving Cleveland a 1-0 lead. Amed Rosario was up next and came through big time. Rosario roped a double into center field which was enough for Naylor to score.

James Karinchak came on in the 10th looking for his first save of the season. Karinchak was able to get the job done. Striking out Nick Williams, including a Yasmani Grandal ground out, and a Jake Lamb fly out to secure the 2-0 win for Cleveland.

Game 3 of the series will take place Wednesday at 8:10 P.M.

Costly error in 9th leads to 4-3 Cleveland loss

An untimely throwing error lead to a run scoring for the Chicago White Sox in the 9th.

The bottom of the 9th is an awful time for a throwing error to occur, but that is what happened for the Cleveland Baseball Club Monday. Yu Chang, making his seventh appearance at first base in his career threw wide of second base on what should have been an inning ending double play. The ball got far enough away for Nick Madrigal to come around to score and end the game.

This is not something to hammer Chang for all that much. As mentioned above, Chang was making his seventh career appearance at first base, a position he is pretty much learning on the fly. This is just part of the growing pains of a player learning a new position, it unfortunately happened at the worst possible time for this game.

Cleveland did score three runs in this game, which is about as expected for this team. Eddie Rosario got things started in the 2nd inning with a two-run homer, his second of the year. Down 1 in the 6th, Franmil Reyes hit a deep sacrifice fly to center allowing Yu Chang to score. That was the last chance for Cleveland to score with less than two outs in an inning. Every opportunity that followed with a runner in scoring position was with two outs in the inning.

It was the first start of the season for Triston McKenzie and it went about as expected. McKenzie, who is being eased into innings this season, needed 76 pitches to get through 4 innings. During those innings, the young pitcher allowed 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. It was a nAdam Eaton three run homer which did all the damage against McKenzie.

Cleveland has a chance to level the series with Shane Bieber taking the mound Tuesday.

Triston McKenzie takes the mound in Chicago

The Cleveland Baseball Club turns to the 23-year old pitcher in their first game of their series with the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field

This is the first series for the Cleveland Baseball Club that will give an accurate idea of their talent level. Fresh off a sweep of the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland takes on the Chicago White Sox. Chicago is one of two favorites to win the division, setting up a much anticipated series between the two clubs. Getting the start for Cleveland in Game 1 is the young Triston McKenzie.

Triston McKenzie appeared in a game for Cleveland prior, allowing 1 run on 2 hits in 3.2 innings of relief. McKenzie struck out 5 batters while walking 4, not necessarily a great outing. Cleveland and Triston McKenzie will be hoping for a better outing on Monday. Overall, McKenzie has impressed in his 37 innings in the majors, with a 3.16 ERA, 0.973 WHIP, and a 11.4 K/9 in his 9 appearances. The key for the young pitcher will be to limit walks, an area that the White Sox excel in. If he can limit the free passes, there is possibility that Triston McKenzie comes away with a win in his first start. If not a loss could be the end result for Cleveland.

The White Sox will start Carlos Rodon who was impressive in his first start of the season a week ago. Rodon allowed only 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9 Mariners in a 6-0 win for the White Sox. Jose Ramirez has faired well in the past against Rodon, going 10-34 with 4 doubles and 1 triple. All other Cleveland batters have combined to go 4-33 with 16 strikeouts.

UPDATE

Carlos Rodon was scratched prior to the game for Chicago. Lefty Dallas Keuchel will take over starting pitching duties fore the White Sox.

Jose Ramirez leads the way with 6 hits in 14 at-bats, 5 of which were doubles. Amed Rosario is 4-9 and Cesar Hernandez is 2-9 with a double. There’s is a positive track record against Keuchel for Cleveland, albeit a small one, but positive results nonetheless.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 P.M. at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Shane Bieber starts for Cleveland against White Sox

The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner takes the mound as the Cleveland Baseball Club takes on the Chicago White Sox.

It is time for the Cleveland Baseball Club to continue a significantly more difficult part of their schedule as they take on the Chicago White Sox Tuesday. Good thing for them they can call on reigning AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber to start Game 2 in Chicago.

Shane Bieber is 0-1 on the year, but don’t let the record fool you. Bieber has stuck out 24 batters in just 12.1 innings pitched this season, which leads all of baseball. Bieber’s last start came against the Royals on Wednesday as he came away with a no-decision in the Cleveland win. Bieber allowed 2 runs on 3 hits with 12 strikeouts, the issue being the 4 walks in the game. The 25-year old pitcher needs to cut down on the free passes in order to go deeper into games.

In his career Shane Bieber has had some trouble when facing a few White Sox batters. Jose Abreu is 7-20 with 3 home runs and Yoan Moncada is 6-19 with 2 home runs and 1 double. It will be crucial for Bieber to shut these two bats down Tuesday if he wants to put Cleveland in a position to win.

Chicago’s starter will be Lucas Giolito who is 1-0 on the season with a 4.22 ERA. Giolito has allowed 5 runs in 10.2 innings this season with 18 strikeouts. The 26-year old pitcher has given up homers to Eddie Rosario (2), Jose Ramirez, and Ben Gamel in his career. Cleveland will be hoping that they can channel some of their earlier success to pair with Shane Bieber on the mound.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 P.M. at Guaranteed Rate Field.
