Cleveland pummels Detroit with five home runs

The Cleveland Baseball Club won their third straight game against the Detroit Tigers thanks to five home runs in an 11-3 victory.

The long ball has come a theme for the Cleveland Baseball Club when facing the Detroit Tigers. It was two home runs in Friday’s 4-1 victory, both from Franmil Reyes. Cleveland slugged five home runs in their 11-3 Saturday night as they secured a series win against Detroit.

Roberto Perez got things started for Cleveland in the 2nd inning with a two-run shot.

A bat in desperate need to break out, Cesar Hernandez, launched a solo shot for his first home run of the year in the 3rd.

One of the more divisive players in the lineup, Jordan Luplow, blasted a three-run jack in the 4th inning to blow the game wide open.

Luplow actually hit a second home run in the game, but it was incorrectly called a double by those in charge of the review process in New York.

Building upon his hot Friday night, Franmil Reyes hit a solo shot in the 7th to increase the Cleveland lead back to eight.

With an eight run lead in the 8th, Andres Gimenez came up to the plate and hit his first homer in a Cleveland uniform. This home run gave Cleveland a temporary 10-run lead.

As far as pitching goes, Aaron Civale was dominant on the mound. Civale kept the Tigers in check, allowing 1 run on 3 hits over 7.2 innings of work. Cleveland could not have asked anything more from Civale and he delivered.

Oliver Perez and Trevor Stephan handled the final 1.1 innings for Cleveland. The Tigers actually got to Stephan when it did not matter and added two more runs for their side.

Cleveland has a chance to sweep Detroit when they take on the Tigers Sunday at 1:10 P.M.

Cleveland looks to take Game 2 in Detroit

After losing 3-2 on Opening Day to the Detroit Tigers, the Cleveland Baseball Club is looking to even the series.

Opening Day did not go well for the Cleveland Baseball Club, even leading to an epic moment from Bruce Drennan following the game. Cleveland has a chance to even the series Saturday 1:10 at Comerica Park.

Zach Plesac gets the ball in Game 2 and he has shown the ability to limit the Tigers in the past. Tigers outfielder JaCoby Jones is the only Detroit batter to take him deep, managing 2 hits in their 3 matchups. Victor Reyes is 2-4 off of Pleasc, but this is an incredibly small sample size. Nomar Mazara is the only player to face him more than 10 times and is 2-11 in his career. Miguel Cabrera, Jeimer Candelario, Harold Castro, and Niko Goodrum are a combined 3-21 with 9 strikeouts against Plesac.

The biggest issue for Cleveland in the opener was the inability to string enough hits together. There are few batters in the Cleveland lineup who has shown the ability to fair well against Tigers starter Julio Teheran. Amed Rosario is 5-22 with 2 doubles and 2 triples while walking twice and striking out 7 times. All three of Franmil Reyes’ hits off of Teheran have gone for extra-bases, 2 home runs and 1 double. Cesar Hernandez also has his fair share of extra-base hits off of Teheran, with 4 home runs and 2 doubles in in 42 at-bats.

With a win on Saturday things would be looking much better for Cleveland. The last thing anyone needs is more angry calls to the aforementioned Bruce Drennan. But then again…

First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 P.M. at Comerica Park

Cesar Hernandez agrees to deal with Cleveland

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club has agreed to a deal with the veteran second baseman.

After an offseason that has been quiet on the free agency front, the Cleveland Baseball Club is bringing a familiar face back into the fold. According to Jon Heyman, Cleveland has agreed to a deal with Cesar Hernandez.

Cleveland agreed to a deal with Cesar Hernandez last season that proved to be a great one. Hernandez started 58 of 60 games for Cleveland and was a very productive bat in the lineup, slashing .283/.355/.408/.763 and led the American League with 20 doubles.

By adding Cesar Hernandez back into the lineup it places less pressure on younger player to perform, most notably the recently acquired Andres Gimenez. Cleveland may be able to juggle the combination of Hernandez, Gimenez, and Amed Rosario at some point this season in order to manufacture an offense.

Roberto Perez and Cesar Hernandez win Gold Gloves

The Cleveland Baseball Club’s catcher and second baseman won Gold Gloves.

Three members of the Cleveland Baseball Club were up for Gold Gloves and two of them won. Roberto Perez and Cesar Hernandez ended up being Gold Glove winners.

This is the second straight Gold Glove for Perez and the first for Hernandez. Hernandez is the first Cleveland second baseman to win a Gold Glove since Roberto Alomar in 2001. Perez is the third catcher to win the award and this is the fifth overall in club history. Previous catchers to win the award include Sandy Alomar Jr. and Ray Fosse.

Cleveland: Hernandez, Perez, Leon are free agents

The roster for the Cleveland Baseball Club is currently at 37 following the conclusion of the 2020 World Series.

The Cleveland Baseball Club will have to figure out just what they want to do in regards to three players who are now free agents. Cesar Hernandez, Sandy Leon, and Oliver Perez are no longer on the roster now that the season is over.

Sandy Leon is someone that Cleveland should probably look at other options first before entering into contract negations. Leon was mostly forgettable at the plate this season and is not a long term option at catcher.

If Oliver Perez wants to continue playing he could sign another one-year contract with the club. Perez and whatever Fountain of Youth he brought with him has been a productive bullpen arm for Cleveland the past three years. For a team that is going to prioritize low-cost options, Perez would be a perfect fit.

Cesar Hernandez is where things get frustrating for Cleveland’s front office and the fanbase. Hernandez was a low risk signing that ended up paying off for Cleveland. Hernandez slashed .283/.355/.408/.763 in 58 games and led the league in doubles with 20. In a perfect world he re-signs and stays in town, but unfortunately that does not seem to be the case. The 2020 campaign for Hernandez may have put him out of Cleveland’s price range and it seems highly likely he is playing elsewhere in 2021.

Baseball awards season is approaching and the Cleveland Baseball Club has. three potential Gold Glove winners on their roster. Second baseman Cesar Hernandez, catcher Roberto Perez, and pitcher Zach Plesac have all been nominated.

The only player nominated for Cleveland who has won a Gold Glove is Perez, having won the award last season. Herandnez could become the first second baseman since Roberto Alomar in 2001 to win a Gold Glove There has not been a pitcher to win a Gold Glove, if Plesac were to win he would become the first.

Perez’ has a chance to repeat and will have to compete with White Sox catchers Yasmani Grandal and James McCann. There is another Chicago player up for a Gold Glove, second baseman Danny Mendick. Mendick along with Detroit’s Jonathan Schoop will be the competition for Hernandez at second base. Plesac will have to beat out Griffin Canning of the Angels and Kenta Maeda of the Twins if franchise history is going to be made.

The Gold Glove winners will be revealed Tuesday, November 3rd at 7 P.M.

Carlos Carrasco will start on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates as the Cleveland Baseball Club begins their final regular season series.

The Cleveland Baseball Club is fresh off a four-game sweep of the White Sox and have won five straight overall. Cleveland will look to continue their good fortunes Friday as they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates with Carlos Carrasco on the mound.

Carlos Carrasco does not have the best history when facing some of the Pirates batters. Pittsburgh is slashing .310/.381/.357/.738 against Cookie in 14 at-bats. Josh Bell and Adam Frazier are both 1-3, although Bell does have a double. Jacob Stallings is 1-2 and Colin Moran is 1-1 with a walk. Erik Gonzalez, Bryan Reynolds, and Gregory Polanco are a combined 0-5 with 2 strikeouts.

The Pirates starter will be Mitch Keller and only one Cleveland batter has faced him in the past, Cesar Hernandez. Hernandez is 2-3 with 3 RBI and 1 strikeout against Keller. The 24-year old right hander has had a productive season, compiling a 3.24 ERA, 1.140 WHIP, and 7 K/9 in 16.2 innings this season. Keller is coming off his last start in which he did not allow a hit, struck out 6, and walked 2 in 6 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The game is scheduled to start at 7:10 P.M.

Cleveland completes sweep of White Sox

The Cleveland Baseball Club used a four-run 7th inning to propel themselves to a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox Thursday night.

Down 3 runs in the 7th inning the Cleveland Baseball Club rallied and channeled some of their late inning magic. They were able to score 4 runs in the inning and come away with a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox completing the four game sweep.

The bottom of the 7th started off with singles from Josh Naylor, Tyler Naquin, and Mike Freeman. After Delino DeShields grounded into a fielders choice and Francisco Lindor popped out, Cesar Hernandez came up to the plate. Hernandez would drive in 2 runs with a single to bring Cleveland within 1. Jose Ramirez would follow Hernandez and he delivered, driving in 2 more runs to give Cleveland a 5-4 lead. Cleveland would hold on to the lead and secure the victory over the stumbling White Sox.

Ups and downs from the pitching staff

Zach Plesac started for Cleveland and he was up and down. Plesac allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in 6.2 innings with 7 strikeouts. Plesac allowed a solo home run to Yolmer Sanchez of all people in the 3rd inning. Like Cleveland, Chicago did most of their damage in the 7th inning. The White Sox combined 3 hits and a walk to push 3 runs across in the inning. Plesac would leave after Nomar Mazara drove in 2.

The Cleveland bullpen did their job after Plesac’s exit. Cam Hilll came in during the 7th and ended the inning and would go on to begin and finish the 8th. Brad Hand came on in the 9th to record his 15th save of the season.

Cleveland is currently 2 games back of the Minnesota Twins and 1 game back of the Chicago White Sox. Things could get interesting in the AL Central as the White Sox face the Cubs, the Twins take on the Reds, and Cleveland plays against the lowly Pirates.

Cleveland’s final regular season series begins Friday at 7:10 P.M.

Jose Ramirez walk-off sends Cleveland to postseason

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club clinched a postseason berth Tuesday courtesy of a Jose Ramirez walk-off three-run home run in the 10th.

It couldn’t have been scripted any better. Runners on 1st and 2nd, down 1 in the 10th with 2 outs in a 2-2 count, Jose Ramirez clobbered a walk-off three run home run to secure a 5-3 victory and send the Cleveland Baseball Club back to the postseason after missing the playoffs last season.

This was the only hit of the game for Jose Ramirez, but it came at just the right time. The recent success of Ramirez has put him right in the middle of the American League MVP discussion and it is moments like this which give him a really good case. Right now Jose Ramirez is carrying the Cleveland Baseball Club on his back and this is a hot streak that he is hoping carries into the playoffs. In addition to getting some help from his teammates of course.

Jose Ramirez was not the only player to homer for Cleveland

Cleveland actually struck first in this game, Cesar Hernandez hit a solo shot in the 1st to make it 1-0 early.

Cal Quantrill started for Cleveland and pitched well, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk in 4 innings with 4 strikeouts. Quantrill only needed 38 pitches to get through 4 innings and more could not of be asked of him, especially considering the start on short notice.

Adam Plutko would follow Quantrill and he found himself in trouble early. Chicago loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 5th, but Plutko was able to dance out of trouble thanks to an inning ending double play. Plutko wouldn’t get lucky again as he allowed a game-tying home run to Jose Abreu the following inning. The White Sox would threaten again in the 9th, but nothing came of it.

The game would go to extras and Chicago would put the pressure on Cleveland. Adam Engel tripled home a run and was driven in by Nick Madrigal in the following at-bat.

In the bottom of the inning a near two-run homer from Francisco Lindor would bring Cleveland to within 1. Cesar Hernandez would walk which set up Jose Ramirez for his epic final moment. Now Cleveland is back in the postseason and is looking to make a deeper run that their last two attempts. Perhaps a scorching hot Jose Ramirez can make that happen.
