Browns not good enough in loss to Steelers

The Cleveland Browns had a chance to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers late, but were unable to take advantage, losing 15-10.

For the third time this season the Cleveland Browns were trailing with less than four minutes remaining and they had a chance to score to win the game. Also for the third time this season Baker Mayfield was not able to make that happen as the Browns lost their first divisional game of the season. One more thing that happened for a third time, the final drive of the game was Cleveland’s third that lasted eight plays or more and resulted in zero points.

On the surface Baker Mayfield had what some would call a good game, completing 20 of 31 pass attempts for 225 yards. The issue is that these numbers were the product of dump-offs and screen passes, a recurring theme for this entire season. Additionally, Mayfield was off all game long. Passes were not on target, even completed ones, and that has been a constant in all seven games for Mayfield. While a lot of the blame is getting passed on to the receivers who did not catch the ball, a better pass from Mayfield would have made that possible, but unfortunately that was not the case. Passes were high, behind, and simply not in the right spot time and time again. And when the Browns needed their quarterback to make a play, he came up short, again, in predictable fashion.

Opposing defenses are not scared of Mayfield and welcome the Browns to win with their passing attack, a task that is too much for them currently. Until Mayfield starts reading the entire field and making other teams pay, there is no reason for defenses to abandon this strategy.

Defense did not help

The Cleveland Browns defense did not have a great day. Sure, they limited the Steelers to just 15 points, but other numbers point to an issue that is quite alarming. Pittsburgh ran 69 plays compared to Cleveland’s 58 and controlled the clock with 31:45 of possession. The Browns defense has an extremely hard time getting off the field consistently and the fact that the Steelers had three drives with 10 or more plays shows just that. Opposing offenses are able to convert time and time again and keep the Browns offense off the field.

It’s crunch time now

Now at 4-4 and in last place in the AFC North, the Cleveland Browns face must win games for the rest of the season. This team will have to go on an absolutely incredible run to return to the playoffs. Considering how this team has operated offensively and the fact the defense has been underwhelming this appears to be a very unlikely scenario.

Baker Mayfield to start Sunday vs. Steelers

The Cleveland Browns will see the return of their starting quarterback when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday.

After missing last Thursday’s game due to multiple injuries, Baker Mayfield will be making his return to the starting lineup. Mayfield is dealing with a torn labrum and fractured humerus bone in his non-throwing shoulder.

Injured or not, Baker Mayfield has not been himself this season. Throws have been off-target or ill-timed, two things that can be due to his injury. Unfortunately subpar field vision, poor timing, a lack of pocket presence, and holding the ball longer than should does not apply to his injuries. Mayfield’s numbers this season have been pedestrian at best and when the team turned to Case Keenum last week they saw a typical Mayfield performance from the last two seasons under Kevin Stefanski.

If Baker Mayfield were to struggle or see his injuries in shoulder become worse, it would not be all that surprising to see the Browns turn to Keenum once again.

Browns defeat Broncos 17-14

Backed by performances from D’Ernest Johnson and Case Keenum, the Cleveland Browns defeated the Denver Broncos.

The Cleveland Browns were without Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, and Jack Conklin Thursday night, but that did not matter as they took down the Denver Broncos 17-14.

D’Ernest Johnson was the breakout player of the game for Cleveland. Johnson rushed for 146 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries. The 146 yard performance from Johnson is the third-highest total in the first career start for a running back.

Without Baker Mayfield it was Case Keenum time. Keenum completed 21 of 33 pass attempts for 199 yards and one touchdown. While the yardage total is not impressive, Keenum was decisive and executed the offense as instructed. Being able to step in on short notice with about a half day of real preparation and guide the offense to a win is no small feat. Keenum stepped up when the Browns needed him to.

If there is one player the Browns offense missed the past four games it was Jarvis Landry. Landry finished with five receptions for 37 yards and was the much needed safety blanket for the thrust into action Keenum. Like it or not, Landry is the most important receiver on the Browns currently and his presence changes how they can operate in the passing game.

The Browns have a mini-bye as their next game is October 31st against Pittsburgh. This will give the team some time to get healthy and Keenum, if still the starter, a bit more time to become more comfortable in the starting role.

Baker Mayfield: Foolish or Fearful?

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield wants to play with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, is it due to foolishness or fearfulness?

There is one thing about Baker Mayfield that cannot be questioned and that is his toughness. Mayfield suffered a complete labrum tear in his left shoulder in Week 2 and has continued to play through the injury. It takes one tough individual to play though this injury. Considering that Mayfield’s shoulder continues to pop out, even on non-contact plays, that just shows how tough he is. Until Wednesday morning it was expected that Mayfield would start against Denver before being ruled out due to his injury. It is quite curious how adamant Mayfield was about playing considering the severity of the injury.

Playing through an injury which should probably end his season is certainly foolish. Especially considering that this injury can go from season-ending to career-altering . But is there something else at play? Perhaps fearfulness?

One thing has been abundantly clear since the beginning of last season, while Baker Mayfield has been efficient, he has not been dynamic in this offense. A lot of throws he is attempting and completing have been designed well by head coach Kevin Stefanski. Looking solely at this year Mayfield has been very erratic and some of that has to do with the injury. Other reasons for his inconsistent play include indecisiveness, poor footwork, a lack of vision, and no feel for the offense.

But why is Mayfield so insistent on playing through this injury?

Is it possible that if Case Keenum comes in and plays at a similar level or even better that it could impact his financial future? Is it a fear that a similar or better performance from Keenum shows that it has been the offensive scheme all along and Mayfield is less responsible for his production than people think? Maybe Keenum finally makes Odell Beckham Jr. effective in this offense, something Mayfield has failed to do up to this point. Keenum does have experience in the Stefanski scheme and Mayfield has struggled locating open receivers, most notably Beckham, leaving a lot to be desired in the passing game.

If Beckham suddenly starts looking like the player the Browns were promised upon acquiring him prior to 2019, what does that say about Mayfield? Suddenly Mayfield does not have such a firm hold on the starting quarterback position and that could put his future in Cleveland in question. That next contract no longer has the large dollar figure or length that many projected Mayfield to receive. While it is not the same as being Wally Pipped (due to the fact Keenum is older than Mayfield), it is an interesting comparison nonetheless.

So when it comes to Baker Mayfield being foolish or fearful, perhaps it is both.

Baker Mayfield out Thursday vs Denver

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will not play Thursday night against the Denver Broncos.

When the Cleveland Browns take the field against the Denver Broncos they will be doing so without Baker Mayfield. Case Keenum will start in place for the injured Mayfield Thursday night.

This will be the first start in Cleveland for Keenum and the first game that Mayfield does not start for the Browns since taking over the job in 2018.

Baker Mayfield has complete labrum tear

The left shoulder labrum of the Cleveland Browns quarterback is completely torn.

Some developments in the saga that is the left shoulder labrum of Baker Mayfield. According to Mayfield the labrum has been completely torn since the initial injury in Week 2.

Baker Mayfield would also add that “other stuff was frayed within it”.

In regards to his status for Thursday, Baker Mayfield said “I get to say whether I’m able to play or not.”

Considering the nature and severity of his injury it may not be the best decision to be playing in his current state. This is not a contest for how tough of a human he is, this is not only about the current state of the Browns as a whole, but Baker Mayfield’s future as an NFL quarterback. Perhaps Mayfield should rethink trying to play through this injury.

Cardinals did not respect Browns passing attack

The Arizona Cardinals clearly did not respect Baker Mayfield and the passing attack of the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Nothing says we dare you to beat us through the air more than what the Arizona Cardinals did Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Arizona came out in a 6-2 front which does make running the ball more difficult, but dares the offense to throw the ball.

This speaks volumes about how teams view Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield did complete 19 of 28 pass attempts for 234 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, but 57 yards came on the Hail Mary touchdown to Donovan Peoples-Jones at the end of the first half. It was a struggle throughout the game for Mayfield to complete passes, routinely not seeing guys running wide open and missing throws.

So far this season Baker Mayfield is 18th in passing yards (1,474), 25th in passing touchdowns (6), 13th in completion percentage (67.1%), 18th in passing for first downs (69), 16th in rating (97.8), 26th in QBR (41.5), and has been sacked the second-most times (18). If other teams apply a similar strategy when facing the Browns more often than not it will be successful. Mayfield is not able to make opposing teams pay when they dare him to throw and until that changes it will continue to be a problem.
