The Cleveland Browns and former first overall pick Myles Garrett are closing in on a five-year extension worth $125 million.
Note: This is an updated version of an earlier post
Sooner or later the Cleveland Browns were going to have to hand Myles Garrett an extension. It appears that Cleveland chose sooner as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the two sides are closing in on a deal.
This is huge. Cleveland will be able to keep their best defensive player under contract for the foreseeable future. According to Pro Football Focus, Myles Garrett had the second-highest pass-rushing grade among edge rushers in 2019 and has the second-highest since 2017.
Of course the final details on the deal still have to be finalized as Rapoport said, but it is expected to be completed.
With this deal being close to complete, the decision to rework Oliver Vernon’s contract looks a whole lot better now. It was always about Vernon’s contract and “what else”? That what else is a new deal for Garrett.
Update
Myles Garrett has signed his new deal making the extension official.
Garrett even posted a little video with a message to the fans.
Cleveland now has their elite pass rusher under contract for the long haul.
