Indians sign Wes Helsabeck to minor league deal

The Cleveland Indians have signed 27-year old left handed pitcher Wes Helsabeck to a minor league dea and will be in minor league camp.

Sounds like the Cleveland Indians are not done adding minor league pitchers into their system. A day after signing lefty Ty Boyles, the Tribe signed another lefty in Wes Helsabeck. Both pitchers were signed to minor league deals.

Wes Helsabeck was part of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization since 2015. Spending time bouncing around various levels of their minor league system without advancing more than one game above the A+ level.

A: 14 games, 2.08 ERA .0692 WHIP 10.4 K/9
A+: 41 games, 3.76 ERA 1.405 WHIP 11.7 K/9

Since 2018 things have been a struggle for Helsabeck. In 10 games in the Pioneer League Helsabeck had a 8.56 ERA, 1.756 WHIP, and a K/9 of 9.9. 2019’s stint in the California league was not much better. Finishing with a 4.34 ERA, 1.511 WHIP and 12 K/9 in 29 games for Advanced A Rancho Cucamonga.

Perhaps Cleveland saw something they liked out of Wes Helsabeck during his recent seven game stint in the Australian League. Helsabeck had a much improved 1.91 ERA, .850 WHIP, and a 10.8 K/9 in 37.2 innings.

Cleveland seems to be on the lookout for low-cost left handed minor league pitching. The Indians may view these guys as projects to turn their careers around or just to get a closer look at someone they previously had their eye on.
