The Cleveland Indians got their first win of the spring. A 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies backed by the bats of Carlos Santana and Daniel Johson.
It took a few days, but the Cleveland Indians are finally in the win column. Tuesday’s 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies was a sign of things turning around in Arizona. Cleveland had lost two straight after a tie against Cincinnati in the first Spring Training game of the year.
Carlos Santana did Carlos Santana things Tuesday, going 1-3 with three runs driven in. One via an RBI groundout and the others coming from a two-run blast in the sixth inning. While Santana has struggled to begin this spring, a performance like this should get the Indians first baseman going,
Daniel Johnson has continued to put on a display in Arizona. The 23-year old outfielder is absolutely raking right now and continued to do so in Tuesday’s victory. Johnson went 2-3 at the plate and drove in two runs. Johnson was able to show off both power and speed by driving in runs with a triple and solo homer. The Indians may have an unexpected contender for an outfield spot if this type of production continues.
Cleveland’s pitching staff was much improved Tuesday, only allowing three runs over the course of the game. This is a drastic improvement over the 11 runs allowed in Monday’s loss to Texas. The bullpen regulars of Dan Otero and Adam Cimber each pitched one inning without allowing a hit and striking out one batter each.
This victory should calm the panic that started to begin in some groups due to the early struggles. There is still a long way to go and Tuesday was a much better from the Indians overall.
Wednesday has the Indians playing two games via the split squad format.
At Milwaukee and versus Seattle. Both games take place at 3:05 P.M. Wednesday.
