The Cleveland Guardians were reportedly not willing to open up their wallets when it comes to paying up for the usage of the name.
A recent report in the sage of the Cleveland Guardians baseball team and the Cleveland Guardians roller derby team has revealed just how much the baseball team was willing to pay for the name, it was not much.
According to the story, the baseball team offered less than $10,000 to the roller derby team. An offer this low is insulting for a team that has been established in the area for quite some time and has owned the domain name for just as long. Considering that teams such as the Cleveland Guardians baseball team are worth a pretty penny and rake in an undisclosed amount of money per season, it is easy to understand why the roller derby outfit was not willing to accept their offer.
The tactics from the Cleveland Guardians baseball team in this area are about on par for how they usually handle business. Problem is this is not the same as signing some low-cost free agent or negotiating a trade for a player. This is a situation where the other party has hand, or leverage for the non-Seinfeld fans out there, and will need to be paid accordingly. There was a chance to handle this situation in a manner that would not have been embarrassing, but that time has passed. Unfortunately for the Guardians baseball team, they simply cannot steamroll their way out of this and that is what has been found out as this process has gone on. Their questionable tactics from the start have been highlighted and as more information comes to light the less favorable they look.
The time for the baseball team to save face is long gone and now they must figure out if they are actually going to be able to go forward with their rebrand or have to figure out some other moniker to play under.
