Chicago White Sox pitcher Dallas Keuchel did not mince words when discussing the American League Central, notably the Cleveland Guardians. Keuchel was quite critical of Cleveland stating, “From a CBA standpoint, I’d like Cleveland to pay their players more”.
Keuchel is not the only person who wants the Guardians to pay their players more, as this has been a common complaint. Cleveland has been able to thread the needle, balancing spending and winning, but they have a reputation as being cheap. While there have been a few instances that have seen the team spend, it is never enough. The conversation always steers towards when will the team trade their star player rather than sign him to an extension. To this point in free agency, Cleveland’s lone signing has been Luke Maile. When the other teams in the division are spending and Cleveland is essentially doing nothing, it certainly provides some credibility to the criticism from Keuchel.
