The Cleveland Baseball Club was able to snap their four game losing streak and avoided being swept by the New York Yankees.
Sunday provided the Cleveland Baseball Club with a chance for redemption. Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the New York Yankees was just the latest and things were not looking good early for Cleveland. New York looked like they were going in for the kill as they hit two home runs in the 4th inning to take a 3-0 lead. At that moment it was Cleveland’s turn to channel the Yankees from earlier in the series.
With Cesar Hernandez and Jose Ramirez already on base, Eddie Rosario would single to tally their first run of the game. In the next at-bat Franmil Reyes came up to the plate, crushing a three-run homer to give Cleveland the lead.
Unlike the first two games in the series, the runs did not stop coming. Jose Ramirez would drive in Austin Hedges with a sacrifice fly in the 5th to make it 5-3 Cleveland.
Their lead would grow again thanks a Jordan Luplow RBI double which allowed Franmil Reyes to score. Luplow was not on base for long as Austin Hedges would drive him in with a single to score their seventh and final run of the game.
A collective pitching effort
Triston McKenzie was Cleveland’s starter and it was a laborious start. McKenzie gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. While the Yankees were a tough opponent to begin with, McKenzie did not help himself with the high amount of free passes. All of this led to McKenzie only lasting 4 innings and several pitchers carrying the load after.
Sam Hentges was the next pitcher and the last to give up a hit to New York. Hentges allowed 2 hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
While Hentges was the last to allow a hit, Cal Quantrill was the last. to allow a baserunner. Quantrill walked one batter in 1.1 innings following Hentges.
The final two pitchers were James Karinchak and Emmanuel Clase. Both pitchers did what was expected of them. Karinchak struck out all three batters he faced and Clase shut down the 9th on 10 pitches.
