Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Channing Frye has announced he will retire at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 NBA season.
There was speculation about just how much longer Channing Frye will play in the NBA. After a curious comment on Instagram, Channing Frye took to his twitter account make his intentions clear.
While Channing Frye has not played that much this season, (five starts in 29 games), he is still a veteran presence for a young Cavaliers team. Frye is been able to help mentor a young team in a trying season. Cleveland currently owns the third-worst record in the league and it may have been worse without Frye on the roster.
This season is Frye’s second stint with the Cavaliers. Frye was a member of the team last year before being shipped off to Los Angeles in an effort to reshape the roster. After the season concluded Cleveland and Frye agreed to a deal which saw the veteran return to the Cavaliers.
Frye was an integral part of the 2016 NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers. In 17 games Frye averaged 6.7 points in 13.9 minutes per game. While these totals are not eye-popping, the effectiveness of his time on the court is what mattered. Frye made 59.4 percent of his shots, including 56.5 percent from three-point range. Frye’s effective field goal percentage was 78.3 percent, this led all players in the 2016 NBA Playoffs.
In response to his announcement on Twitter a fan suggested that Channing Frye should never have to buy a drink or meal in Cleveland again. Frye seemed quite agreeable to this arrangement.
Cleveland likes Channing Frye and apparently Channing Frye likes Cleveland. Wherever Frye ends up after his playing days are over, the city will always appreciate his contributions in ending an extremely long championship drought.
