There is a very likely possibility that the Cleveland Cavaliers could end up trading the center at the trade deadline.
Andre Drummond could very well be traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. Per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the belief is that it would happen at the trade deadline rather than early in the season.
“Multiple sources believe the Cavs’ best chance to flip Drummond (provided he opts into his $28.7 million contract) would be around the trade deadline.”
Fedor also added that head coach JB Bickerstaff is preparing to have Andre Drummond on the roster. Even though Bickerstaff said this, it really seems like Drummond’s future in Cleveland will be of the short term variety. The fact of the matter is that the Cavs are far away from contending and would be better off trading players in order to acquire future assets.
By waiting to trade Andre Drummond until the trade deadline it could give the Cavs some leverage in trade talks. A contending team may find themselves without a key player due to an injury may come calling looking to replace their missing player. Others may view Drummond as the missing piece to what they believe is a championship caliber roster.
To quote George Costanza, the Cavs “Have hand”. It will be all about how they play it and what they can get out of it. The right move can set the team up quite well for the future. The wrong move could keep the team stuck in neutral, which is far from what they need at the current time.
