Cavaliers sign J.P. Macura, Malik Newman

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed two players to 10-day contracts. J.P. Macura and Malik Newman of the Canton Charge will get their chance with the Cavs on short term deals.

J.P. Macura has appeared in 32 games for Canton this season. Macura is averaging 14.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.6 steals, and 2.2 assists in 30.1 minutes per game for the Charge. The 24-year old guard is shooting 48.5% from the field and 34.2% from deep. Macura previously appeared in two games for the Charlotte Hornets last season.

Malik Newman has appeared in 31 games for the Charge. Newman is averaging 17.4 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.4 rebounds in 30.9 minutes per game this season. The soon to be 23-year old guard is making 43% of his shots (34.3% 3PT) with Canton. Unlike Macura, this will be Newman’s first NBA action.

Exactly how long they stay with the Cavaliers is not known. Cleveland has opted to sign multiple players to 10-day contracts this season. The Cavs signed Alfonzo McKinnie to multiple 10-day contracts before signing him to a four-year extension.

It is very possible that their stay is brief and does not last the entire season. Although with the Cavaliers in utter turmoil, they may opt to see just what J.P. Macura and Malik Newman have to offer at the NBA level and sign them for the remainder of the year.
