Cavaliers should move Rubio, Sexton if possible

If the Cleveland Cavaliers can find suitors for the contracts of Ricky Rubio or Collin Sexton they should explore those trade opportunities.

There are two members of the Cleveland Cavaliers who could attract some interest on the trade market. The fascinating part of this development is that neither player is currently playing the Cavs  as Ricky Rubio and Collin Sexton will both miss the remainder of the season. Reports from Shams Charania of The Athletic and Sam Amico of HoopsWire suggest that both could be of interest to other teams.

Charania mentioned that Rubio’s expiring contract combined with draft picks could be a path towards improving the current version of the Cavaliers.

Amico’s report states that moving Sexton would be more likely than Rubio at this current point in time.

Either way the Cavs must approach any possible trades with a level headed approach. The reality is that the way Rubio was playing the team would have moved him at the trade deadline anyway, even if they continued to overachieve. As far as Sexton is concerned, the SexLand experiment is simply not going to work. The starting unit looks tremendously better since the season-ending injury to Sexton and that is with players who are nowhere near as talented in his place. It was never a question of talent, but fit for Sexton in Cleveland. Unless he was relegated to a sixth-man role, his future in Cleveland was always going to be murky.

With the reality that both players would not be here at the end of this season, improving this current version of the team while making trades that would be inevitable anyway seems to be the correct approach to in-season team-building. This team has improved since last season, but they still have a long way to go in terms of competitiveness. Moving players who are otherwise inactive in order to do so would help their long term goals.
