Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Collin Sexton and power forward Kevin Love each reached individual milestones in Thursday’s loss to the Spurs.
Thursday night was another Cleveland Cavaliers loss (good news for the Tank for Zion crowd). A 116-110 loss to San Antonio on the road brings their record to 19-57 on the year with six games remaining. Even though Cleveland lost yet again, there are two bright spots that occurred. Milestones for Kevin Love and Collin Sexton.
Kevin Love needed 17 points to make NBA history and was able to score 18. Love went 7-13 from the field including 2-4 from three-point range and making both free throw attempts. With this scoring effort, Love is now the eighth player with 12,000 points, 7,000 rebounds and 1,000 three-pointers made. Love is in some elite company including the likes of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Being in this group certainly helps his case when it comes to Hall of Fame consideration when his career is over.
Collin Sexton reached an impressive milestone of his own Thursday. The Cavaliers rookie is only the third rookie to average 16.3 points per game while making 40% of his three-point attempts and playing 2,000 minutes. The only other rookies to achieve this are Larry Bird and Stephen Curry.
Now Sexton may not carve out the careers that Bird and Curry have, but things appear to be heading in the right direction after some early season struggles. Sexton has quickly turned things around after looking completely overmatched over the first few months. Reaching a milestone like this certainly shows the improvement that Sexton has made.
The Cavaliers appear to have their point guard of the future in Collin Sexton and a veteran to lean on when needed in Kevin Love. They may not win many games, but they appear to be building something capable of doing so in just a few more seasons.
