Kevin Stefanski: Good team win, corrections needed

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski stated that it was a good team win and that corrections still need to be made.

When meeting with the media Friday Kevin Stefanski shared his thoughts on the their 35-30 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Stefanski said that he thought it was a good team win.

Stefanski also mentioned that coaches are meeting with players because they have to make corrections. No team is perfect is which is why corrections are always necessary.

One notable play was the awful interception from Baker Mayfield. Mayfield forced a pass early in the 4th quarter to Austin Hooper and it gave the Bengals life. While Cleveland did win the game, this is the type of mistake that can lead to a loss against a better team.

Mayfield did not make a lot of mistakes in this game, however this was a play that has been seen time and time again with the third-year quarterback. Fixing this will not be easy (if it can be fixed), but turnovers from the quarterback are never acceptable.

Another play in need of correction is the hit from Andrew Sendejo on Tyler Boyd. Sendejo will not be suspended for the hit, but the fact of the matter is there is no place in the game for lowering his head on a hit.

Browns: Andrew Sendejo will not be suspended

Cleveland Browns safety Andrew Sendejo will not be suspended for his hit on Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd.

Some good news for Andrew Sendejo and the Cleveland Browns defense. Sendejo will not be suspended for his hit on Tyler Boyd in Thursday’s win over the Bengals per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

As Rapoport mentioned, Sendejo is a repeat offender of this rule and a hefty fine could be coming his way.

Andrew Sendejo has not been the most popular player for the Browns through their first two games. Sendejo has been a liability on defense and has not really contributed enough to warrant further playing time. Unfortunately an injury to Grant Delpit forced Cleveland to play him more even though he should see limited snaps on defense.

Observations from the Browns 35-30 win

There are some points worth discussing in the Cleveland Browns 35-30 win over the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday Night.

1. The running backs need to be the focus of the offense

After Week 1 there was this feeling of here we go again in regards to a coach abandoning the running game. Luckily that did not leak into Week 2 as the Browns ran the ball more than they passed. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt combined to rush 32 times for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hunt even contributed in the passing game with 2 receptions for 15 yards and a touchdown. Lean on the running backs to take the pressure off the quarterback.

2. Baker Mayfield looked fine

Let’s not go overboard here, Baker Mayfield performed at an acceptable level for an NFL quarterback. The Browns were able to cater the offense to his strengths (throwing less) and were able to put him in a position to succeed. The offense was able to take advantage of a Bengals defense that is far from dominant and Mayfield was able to find open receivers. This is more of a product of scheme than player, Mayfield finding the open receiver is just the bare minimum requirement to maintain his job. What this performance really shows that is Baker Mayfield is a quarterback who can play well against bad teams and bad against good teams. If Mayfield struggles again when facing a good team that will tell everyone all we need to know about just what type of quarterback he is.

3. The defense is really bad

It is going to be a long year for the Cleveland Browns defense. Joe Burrow threw for 316 yards and 3 touchdowns in just his second career start, this one coming in a short week. Sure, the Browns were without Olivier Vernon, Kevin Johnson, and Greedy Williams, but the difference in the performance of this defense would not have changed that much.

4. The offensive performance on Thursday made what happened Sunday even more frustrating

What the Cleveland Browns did offensively on Sunday and Thursday could not have been more different and that is incredibly frustrating. Kevin Stefanski passed way too much in their loss to the Ravens and rectified that Thursday. But the fact of the matter is they could have ran this exact same offense on Sunday and that would have made people feel a lot better about this team and coaching staff. While the Browns ran plays from the Freddie Kitchens playbook in their loss, they stuck with the offense that everyone was promised under Kevin Stefanski Thursday. This offense could have look liked this against the Ravens, but Stefanski panicked and shifted to a pass heavy attack. This will be something to monitor moving forward.

Browns finally unveil orange pants

The much anticipated debut of the orange pants is here as they will make their return to the uniform sets of the Cleveland Browns.

There was one thing that every fan wanted when the Cleveland Browns revealed their new uniforms earlier this year. Orange pants. Good news! The Cleveland Browns unveiled their orange pants Thursday afternoon. JW Johnson tweeted a photo to officially reveal the new pant color.

The Browns would follow with a hype video featuring past highlights of the orange pants.

Let’s hope they stop here and do not reveal an orange jersey at a later date because that is just too much orange.

Jarvis Landry expected to play Thursday vs. Bengals

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry is expected to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football.

The Cleveland Browns got some good news Thursday morning, Jarvis Landry is expected to play Thursday night. Landry was on the injury report with a hip injury Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jarvis Landry being available is huge for the Browns offense. Landry is the more reliable pass catcher on the team and without him the offense would look worse than it did this past Sunday. If the Browns are going to come away with a win on Thursday it will be heavy doses of Nick Chubb and Jarvis Landry that got things done.

Browns injury update for Wednesday

Things became a bit more clear in regards to who the Cleveland Browns will be without for Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Cleveland Browns will be without four players and possibly more when they take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football. The injury report was released today which revealed that Cleveland will be without Kevin Johnson, Greedy Williams, Mack Wilson, and Jacob Phillips. There are six others who might not play and are currently listed as questionable.

The questionable players include Jack Conklin, Chris Hubbard, JC Tretter, Olivier Vernon, Jarvis Landry, and Jedrick Wills Jr. Missing any of these players would be a huge issue for the Browns if any are not able to go. Cleveland will need all of their offensive lineman to be available in case one gets hurts. Vernon missing would make a thin defensive side of the ball even thinner and force the defense to rely on role players instead of a proven starter. Obviously missing Landry would hurt since he is the most consistent pass catcher on the team.

Joe Burrow could have a field day against this defense Thursday night. Burrow looked capable in his debut against a superior Chargers defense. Now that the jitters from Game 1 are gone, Game 2 should prove to be a more comfortable setting for the rookie quarterback. Cincinnati’s defense is missing some players of their own, but it is not about the quality of the defense that should be Cleveland’s concern. It is whether or not their offense can not look like hot garbage again and show any signs of consistency. This falls on the players on the field and the coaching staff. Week 1 did not necessarily inspire any hope in this area, although they were facing an elite Ravens defense. The Browns have a lot of work to do if they are going to look better in Week 2.

Odell Beckham Jr. not on the block

A tweet from Mike Francesa tempoarily set the NFL world on fire as he claimed that the Cleveland Browns were shopping Odell Beckham Jr.

Sometimes all it takes is one tweet to send everything into a tailspin. That is just what happened Tuesday as Mike Francesa said the Cleveland Browns were shopping Odell Beckham Jr.

Francesa also managed to take a shot at the Browns, calling them clueless, a shot that is well warranted. He would later add they were asking for a lot.

This was quickly shot down by Benjamin Allbright.

Allbright made a good point, Beckham’s value is extremely low as things stand currently. The Browns would take a massive loss by trading him now. Considering the value obsessed nature of the organization this would not be something they would do.

Allbright would also comment that anyone is available for the right pice, but it is not related to the availability of Beckham.

Beckham and the Browns are still together (for now). If things continue to be a struggle things could change. Someone who is currently unavailable may suddenly become available.

Odell Beckham Jr. cares about winning and producing

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. stated that he cares about winning and producing during his media availability Tuesday.

Everyone knows that Odell Beckham Jr. is a competitor. That is why it comes as no surprise that he stated that he only cares about winning and production on Tuesday.

Odell Beckham Jr. stated he would prefer to get involved early in the game and later would compare it to a three-point shooter in basketball.

OBJ was not very productive during Sunday’s loss and was not involved early on. That is why it seemed like Baker Mayfield was forcing the ball to the Browns receiver in the second half, something that the quarterback would deny Tuesday.

What it comes down to for Cleveland is finding the right balance between running and passing. Considering the limitations of the quarterback, running the ball early and often may be the better way to get the most out of this offensive unit. Although this does not necessarily mesh well with how Beckham prefers to be involved in the offense.

Nick Chubb knows Browns can run the ball

Advertisements

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb stated Tuesday that he knows that the team can run the ball and that they need to stick with it.

Coming into the season there is one thing that was pretty much guaranteed about the Cleveland Browns offense. They are going to be able to run the ball. Nick Chubb echoed that assessment on Tuesday.

Nick Chubb also added that the team has to keep running the ball so other aspects of the offense can be productive. That is why Sunday’s game plan was so confusing. The Browns ran the ball 24 times with their running backs and passed 39 times. This seems to be the opposite of what the team should be doing. George Costanza needs to stop doing “The Opposite” and get back to what we all know the team does best, running the football.

Nick Chubb would finish the game with 10 carries for 60 yards and he fumbled once. Kareem Hunt carried the ball 13 times for 72 yards and D’Ernest Johnson had 5 yards on his lone carry of the game. The Browns will need to run early and often if they are going to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals at home on Thursday.

Baker Mayfield denies forcing ball to OBJ

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield denied that he was trying to foce the ball to Odell Beckham Jr. during Sunday’s loss.

While watching the Cleveland Browns get embarrassed Sunday one thing was apparent. Baker Mayfield was forcing the ball to Odell Beckham Jr. When asked about it on Tuesday Mafield denied that he was forcing the ball to him.

Baker Mayfield targeted Odell Beckham Jr. 10 times, the most out of any Browns receiver. On the Browns first series of the second half Mayfield threw in Beckham’s direction six times. The result? 0 completions and 3 first downs due to penalties. Sure, the Browns moved the ball, but it was not because of something positive that they did. It was due to the Ravens committing penalties and bailing out some awful offensive plays. Beckham would finish with 3 receptions for 22 yards.

If Baker Mayfield wants to say that he wasn’t trying to force feed Odell Beckham Jr. that’s fine, but what we saw on Sunday does not reflect what he is saying.
