The Cleveland Browns exercised caution as they sent the 27-year old wide receiver home from practice Thursday with an undisclosed illness.

Odell Beckham Jr. was sent home from practice Thursday with an illness. The exact illness is not known at this time.

Beckham was tested for COVID-19 and the Browns will know his status on Friday.

For now Cleveland is being cautious considering the COVID-19 pandemic and taking possible preventative measures in case Beckham does test positive.

Baker Mayfield confident he’ll play Sunday

The Cleveland Browns quarterback is confident he will be able to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers after being injured last Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

The question about whether or not Baker Mayfield would be playing this week appears to have an answer. Mayfield stated that he is confident that he will face the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday.

Mayfield has settled into a game manager type role this season which is perfectly fine. In 5 games Mayfield has completed 61.2% of his passes for 976 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. These are not eye-popping numbers, just enough to get the job to win games. Cleveland’s failure or success it not dependent on Mayfield, it is on the rushing attack.

If for some reason a setback occurs and Mayfield is unable to go or has to leave the game with an injury the Browns have a competent backup in Case Keenum. Keenum previously played under Kevin Stefanski in Minnesota and excelled in this offensive scheme. Cleveland’s rushing offense is the best in the NFL currently and is the focus of their game plan. Asking Keenum to hand the ball off frequently doesn’t seem to be that big of an ask. The Browns would be able to whether the storm if Baker Mayfield is not on the field. Whether they win or not would be a different story entirely.

Browns: Larry Ogunjobi, Tae Davis return to practice

The Cleveland Browns saw the return of two players on the defensive side of the ball when they practiced on Wednesday.

Larry Ogunjobi and Tae Davis were both out the last time the Cleveland Browns took the field. There is a chance that could change this upcoming Sunday as both players returned to practice Wednesday.

This past Sunday was the first missed game for Ogunjobi and the second for Davis. Even though the Browns were without both players the defense was able to step up and wreak havoc on the Colts offense. Cleveland’s defense would really benefit with an Ogunjobi return this week as they take on division rival Pittsburgh.

Should the Browns pursue Le’Veon Bell?

With the Cleveland Browns down a running back, should they pursue the recently released former Jet?

Le’Veon Bell has been released by the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns could show some interest. Cleveland is dealing with an injury to Nick Chubb and his return is still a little ways away. While they still have Kareem Hunt, some consideration should be given to signing the former Steelers and Jets back.

As things currently stand the stock of Le’Veon Bell is at an all-time low. Bell’s tenure with the Jets was disastrous and came to a unsurprising end. While Bell’s production was not up to the standard expected of him, playing for the buffoon that is Adam Gase did not help matters. All things considered Bell could be looking to build up his value, heading to Cleveland could do just that. While his role could be reduced once Chubb comes back later this season, Bell’s ability as a receiver could keep him in the game plan. It is this flexibilty that could prove to be quite an asset for Cleveland. The Browns could use him in addition to Hunt as a back who produces in the passing game. This is the type of mismatch that can take an offense to the next level.

The Browns rushing attack has been the best in the league and has been the reason they are winning games and that would be appealing to Bell. It’s not whether Bell can be convinced to sign with the Browns, it is if the Browns want to sign Bell. With the offensive scheme being able to essentially plug and play, they really don’t need to add Bell. Although if they believe they can maximize his production in their offense he is at least worth a look.

Garrett Gilbert signed by Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are signing the 29-year old quarterback off the Cleveland Browns practice squad following the injury to Dak Prescott.

Dallas was going to have to sign another quarterback one way or another. The Cowboys decided to sign Garrett Gilbert off the Browns practice squad after an injury to Dak Prescott.

Dallas turned to Andy Dalton in their time of need but they still need to have a third option, that is where Gilbert comes in. Dalton will be their starter with Ben DiNucci and Gilbert battling it out for the backup role. If Dalton were to suffer an injury that would certainly end any hope of Dallas making the playoffs, although the NFC East has been pretty poor this season.

Garrett Gilbert is 2-6 for 40 yards in his career. Gilbert’s two completions came in 2018 with the Panthers while he was 0-3 last season with the Browns.

Greedy Williams placed on injured reserve

Cleveland’s secondary will have to wait for more help as they are placing the former second-round pick on IR.

The 2020 debut of Greedy Williams is not in the immediate future as the Cleveland Browns are placing the second year corner on injured reserve.

The bright side is that Williams does not need surgery and a return/debut is still in the cards. Any sort of production or playing time from Greedy should be considered a bonus at this point as this really seems to be a lost season. If the Browns are able to activate Williams this season it would really help a porous pass defense.

Greedy Williams appeared in 12 games as a rookie finishing with 47 tackles (37 solo). Opposing quarterbacks completed 61.3% of their passes and had a 84.9 QB rating when targeting receivers covered by Williams. While these numbers are not great by any means, Williams did not allow a touchdown so there is something positive to point to.

Observations from Browns 32-23 win over Colts

Four observations from the Cleveland Browns 32-23 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Baker’s second half was awful

Baker Mayfield had a great statistical first half even though he was bailed out a couple of times by Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. The second half was not kind to Mayfield as he went 2-9 for 19 yards and 2 interceptions, including not completing a single pass in the 4th quarter. Passes were off target, Mayfield didn’t see defenders, and he tried to force throws when he shouldn’t. These are the same concerning things that have been seen for some time now and they do not appear to be fixable. The Browns front office and coaching staff need to keep this in mind as the season progresses.

Chubb was missed

Kareem Hunt did an alright job in filling in for Nick Chubb, finishing with 72 yards on 20 carries and catching 3 passes for 21 yards and a touchdown. D’Ernest Johnson even contributed a bit with 8 carries for 32 yards. Overall the Browns rushing attack had a productive day but it was not pretty. Yes this was against a tough defense, but having Chubb would have a made a difference. The combination of Hunt and Johnson can hold down the fort for the time being but once Chubb comes back the offense will be able to shift back into hyperdrive.

Sendejo still stinks

How much longer are the Cleveland Browns going to keep trotting Andrew Sendejo out there? Sendejo is someone who should not be starting at this point in his career. There has to be a better option somewhere on the roster and if not that really does not say a lot about their lack of talent at the position.

Time to put the trick plays on ice for a bit

Trick plays are fun, but it is their unpredictability that makes them work. Kevin Stefnaski has gone trick play heavy lately and they are no longer predictable. It is time to make them a bit more sporadic which will result in teams no longer expecting them. It is when they let their guard down that they will reach peak effectiveness. When the Browns face the Steelers next week they will be prepared for any and all trickery that Cleveland may have up their sleeve. This is something for Stefanski to keep in mind as he is putting the finishing touches on the game plan.

Browns: Karl Joseph, Adrian Clayborn questionable

The Cleveland Browns may be down additional defenders as safety Karl Joseph and defensive end Adrian Clayborn are listed as questionable.

There are already multiple defensive players for the Cleveland Browns who will be out Sunday and there is the possibility for more. Karl Joseph and Adrian Clayborn are listed as questionable for Cleveland as they are set to take on the Indianapolis Colts.

The Browns are down two starters in Larry Ogunjobi and Greedy Williams and could be down another and a key role player. While Joseph is not the greatest safety in the league he is significantly better than the alternatives in the Browns secondary (cough, cough, Andrew Sendejo). Clayborn has been a key addition to the defensive line who has been incredibly productive in his backup role. Being without these two players in addition to the others would be a huge blow to a porous Cleveland defense.

David Njoku will be active vs. Colts

Advertisements

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski stated that tight end David Njoku will be active this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

There will another tight end active for the Cleveland Browns Sunday when they take on the Indianapolis Colts, David Njoku. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Njoku will be active after missing the previous three games due to injury.

The Browns offense has been successful during Njoku’s absence. Cleveland’s running game has carried them to three straight victories while the passing game has taken a back seat and rightfully so. It will be crucial for the Browns to stay with what is working and not try and force David Njoku back into the offensive game plan. Stick with the run and limit pass attempts for Baker Mayfield and when it does become time to pass it is best to target the better options on the roster.

Browns: Greedy, Ogunjobi, and Davis out Sunday

The Cleveland Browns will be without cornerback Greedy Williams, defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, and linebacker Tae Davis this Sunday.

Some bad news for the Cleveland Browns defense ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. Cleveland will be without Greedy Williams, Larry Ogunjobi, and Tae Davis this Sunday.

Greedy Williams is yet to appear in a game this season and Kevin Stefanski stated that they are not considering putting him IR at this time.

This will be the first missed game for Larry Ogunjobi this season. Ogunjobi has been a productive and disruptive presence on the Browns defensive line this season. Ogunjobi has 10 total tackles (2 for loss), and 1 forced fumble.

Tae Davis will miss another game for Cleveland. Davis has only recorded 1 tackle this season, coming in the season opening loss to Baltimore. Most of Davis’ time is on special teams with 39 total snaps while his snap count on defense is only 11.
