This season for the Cleveland Browns will be considered a success no matter the result of their playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Right now the Cleveland Browns are playing with house money. The 2020 season went significantly better than anyone could have realistically imagined. Considering another new coaching staff, an offseason that presented a different set of problems, and question marks all across the roster. Things were stacked up against the Browns and yet they found a way to go 11-5 and make the postseason.

Cleveland will be without their head coach Kevin Stefanski due to testing positive for COVID-19. Joel Bitonio and KhaDarel Hodge will also miss the game because they also tested positive. Are the Browns in a situation where they should be completely counted out? Absolutely not, but there is a clear reason why the Steelers are favored on Sunday night. In addition to playing at home and having previous playoff experience, Pittsburgh has a more complete team at this moment in time.

When the clock has 0:00 on Sunday night and the game is final it is important to keep things in perspective. There is a wide variety of ways that things could have played out this season and making the playoffs did not seem all that likely. The Browns have a clear offensive identity and found a way to make things work with Baker Mayfield. Cleveland’s coaching staff has done an excellent job in being a professional group that has more often than not put the team in a position to succeed.

It is about stepping stones, building things up in order to be considered a contender and not a pretender. What the Browns have managed to do is show that they are trending in the right direction and could be building something sustainable. Even if Cleveland finds themselves on the wrong side of a large score differential it is about keeping in mind where they’ve been and where they’re going. Win or lose on Sunday the 2020 season has been a success and there is no disputing that.

There were questions and assumptions about who would be calling plays for the Browns after Kevin Stefanski tested positive for COVID-19. Stefanski confirmed Wednesday that offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will be calling plays against the Steelers Sunday night.

Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer will be the Browns acting head coach in Stefanski’s absence. Stefanski stated that “It makes sense since the special teams coordinator works with everyone”.

The Cleveland Browns wide receiver was cited for drag racing by Westlake police.

Some not so great news in regards to Cleveland Browns receiver Rashard Higgins. The receiver known as “Hollywood” was cited for drag racing Tuesday morning by Westlake police according to reports.

Not a great look for a team that just clinched their first playoff berth in 18 years. Also not a great look for a player who is very much replaceable in the grand scheme of things. Have to wonder if his status with the team would be different if they were not playing a postseason game Sunday night.

UPDATE

Browns rookie left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. was also cited for drag racing with Higgins.

The Cleveland Browns will be without their left guard and wide receiver when they face the Steelers Sunday night.

In addition to being without head coach Kevin Stefanski, the Cleveland Browns will be without the services of Joel Bitonio and KhaDarel Hodge as they also tested positive for COVID-19.

Being without Joel Bitonio is huge loss for the Browns offensive line. Bitonio is one of the better left guards in the NFL and losing him for a game against Pittsburgh is not ideal. KhaDarel Hodge has come on the past few weeks and has made some impactful plays for the Browns.

The Cleveland Browns have announced that head coach Kevin Stefanski has tested positive for COVID-19.

When the Cleveland Browns take the field for their first playoff game in nearly two decades they will be without Kevin Stefanski. The team announced that Stefanski has tested positive for COVID-19.

In addition to Kevin Stefanski testing positive, two coaches and two players have also tested positive. Those players were later reported to be Joel Bitonio and KhaDarel Hodge.

With Kevin Stefanski unavailable to call plays, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will take over that duty on Sunday.

As of now the game on Sunday is still scheduled to be played.

An already tough task has gotten significantly tougher due to the absence of Kevin Stefanski.

The Cleveland Browns have added a cornerback to their depleted secondary.

With questions in regards to the availability to some of their defensive backs, the Cleveland Browns added an insurance policy by signing Brian Allen from the Bengals practice squad.

Cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Kevin Johnson are currently on the reserve/COVID-19 list and their status for Sunday’s playoff game is not known at this time. Either way, there is no such thing as too many defensive backs. The Browns struggled facing the Steelers B team this past Sunday and facing their A squad will be significantly more difficult.

Brian Allen has appeared in 17 career games, mostly on special teams. Allen has 6 career tackles while being on the rosters/practice squads of Pittsburgh, Seattle, San Francisco, and Cincinnati.

The Cleveland Browns defensive end ruptured his Achilles in the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

When the Cleveland Browns take the field for their first playoff game in nearly two decades they will be without the services of Olivier Vernon. Vernon ruptured his Achilles in Cleveland’s win over the Steelers Sunday.

This a huge loss for the Cleveland Browns defense. Olivier Vernon was having his best season in quite some time and tallied the second-highest sack total of his career (9). Vernon registered all 9 sacks in the final 9 games of the season. This includes 7 sacks over 6 game span and a sack in each of the final three games of the season. The Browns defense will really miss Olivier Vernon when they face the Steelers in a rematch Sunday night.

Kevin Stefanski stated that Porter Gustin and Adrian Clayborn will see increased playing time.

Olivier Vernon was in the final year of his contract and will be in the recovery process while entering free agency.

The Cleveland Browns are going to the playoffs for the first time since 2002 after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-22.

It’s over, it’s finally over. The Cleveland Browns have ended the longest playoff drought in the NFL.

In addition to ending their playoff drought, the Browns won their first season finale against the Steelers since 1987.

With their 24-22 win over the Steelers, the Browns will head to Pittsburgh next week for a rematch. This game will be a bit different as the Steelers rested several players for this matchup. Cleveland will be looking to build off this win while hoping that the week off for the Steelers will impact their chemistry.

No matter the result, enjoy the fact that the Cleveland Browns are in the playoffs.
