The Cleveland Browns reportedly want to see more before offering a contract extension to their starting quarterback.
A story appearing in The Athletic (subscription required) provided some insight into the contract discussions between the Cleveland Browns and quarterback Baker Mayfield. After mentioning that they are yet to extend an offer to Mayfield, there is one main takeaway from early on in the piece that makes a lot of sense.
“…they want to see Mayfield produce over a longer stretch of time in second-year head coach Kevin Stefanski’s offensive system.”
This does not seem to be too much to ask from Cleveland’s perspective. Throughout his career Baker Mayfield has been consistently inconsistent. While the second half of his first year under Kevin Stefanski provided more consistency, there were still times where he was a bit off. Asking Mayfield to be more consistent over a longer period of time does not seem to be too big of an ask considering how much franchise quarterbacks are being paid.
If Baker Mayfield steps up and does what is asked the team will obviously have no problems paying him franchise quarterback money. If not, that is when a different discussion will take place.
