Browns to interview Rich Scangarello

The Cleveland Browns are set to interview Rich Scangarello from the Denver Broncos for their open offensive coordinator position.

Kevin Stefankski’s coaching staff may have a new member. The Cleveland Browns will interview former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello for the same position. Denver fired Scangarello after just one season.

This interview and potential hire makes sense. Scangarello ran a similar offense to what Stefanksi ran while in Minnesota. A version of the Kyle Shanahan offense. Scangarello did work with Shanahan with the Falcons and 49ers prior to his season in Denver. Scangarello was an offensive quality control coach in Atlanta and the quarterbacks coach in San Francisco.

Benjamin Allbright had some kind words to say about Rich Scangarello.

Allbright expressed some concerns as well. The fact that Scangarello appeared to be lost when going off script. Sound familiar? This is exactly what the Browns experienced last season. The fact that Scangarello “got too cute” is also familiar. Trick plays and misdirection are fine in moderation. It can become frustrating if these types of plays are attempted repeatedly without success.

If Cleveland were to hire Rich Scangarello, they would have two people coaching on the offensive side of the ball with limited experience. Scangarello and Stefanski have 35 games combined of NFL offensive coordinator experience. That is not a lot. In fact, the lack of experience is a bit concerning. It would make a bit more sense if the Browns opted to find someone more experienced in this role, because when things go wrong (they will), having someone who has been there before is a great asset. An experienced offensive coordinator can help guide Stefanski through the tough times until they come out the other side. That is if they are able to come out the other side. There have been plenty of times in Cleveland when that simply just does not happen.
