Browns still have obvious roster weakness

When evaluating the roster of the Cleveland Browns, there is one area that is lacking. One would be quick to point to the quarterback position, as Deshaun Watson continues to be a massive disappointment. While this is valid, there is another individual on this team at an important position that has failed to live up to expectations thus far. Jedrick Wills.

The former first-round pick out of Alabama has been fine at best, and a complete disaster at worst. There is simply way too much variance in his play for the Browns to depend on him being anything more than a wild card at the left tackle position. Wills plays just fine against average to below-average talent. However, once an above-average to elite pass rusher lines up on the other side of the line from him, he crumbles. This is the hallmark of a player that is very much replaceable, even if people refuse to admit it.

It would be one thing if Wills was elite at some point or at least above average in an area or two. But the fact of the matter is he is not. Wills is not strong or athletic enough to succeed against some of the talented pass rushers that call the AFC North home. And there is also the fact that Wills’ effort is lacking at times, which is a major cause for concern. Far too often, Wills can be seen standing near his initial spot on the line of scrimmage, watching things play out around him.

Where do the Browns go from here?

When it comes to long-term answers on the offensive line, it is hard to imagine that Wills will be with the Browns beyond this season. This is a team that is already spending a ton of money on offensive linemen better than Wills. Further allocating any more funds to Wills would be simply irresponsible at this time. There is a certain talent and consistency that Wills lacks, which prevents him from being the answer at left tackle. Paying Wills at this time would be settling for mediocrity, and that cannot happen any more than it already has.

Expect someone else to be lining up at left tackle in Cleveland next season, as Wills’ time with the Browns appears destined to end sooner rather than later.
