The Cleveland Browns reached an agreement on a two-year deal with free agent tight Demetrius Harris formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The roster upgrades keep on coming. Cleveland has agreed to terms with free agent tight end Demetrius Harris. Harris is signing with the Browns on a two-year deal. Adam Schefter reported the deal Wednesday morning.
Harris figures to be the Darren Fells replacement. Fells was primarily used as a blocking tight end. Harris will be used in a similar manner. Harris is actually a better run and pass blocker than Fells which will help the Browns offense tremendously.
In five seasons with Kansas City Harris caught 57 passes for 605 yards and six touchdowns. Of course there is the fact that Harris played on a team that featured one of the best tight ends in the game in Travis Kelce. The fact of the matter is that Harris’ value comes in the form of blocking.
Demetrius Harris should be able to help the Browns left and right tackles. Those being Greg Robinson and Chris Hubbard. While Robinson and Hubbard are league-average tackles, they do need help from time to time. Using Harris next to either tackle will help against particularly tough pass rushers or blitzing defenders.
It is not entirely out of the question for Harris to make an impact in the passing game. Well at least in the red zone. Harris is 6’7″ and could be an intriguing target to throw to in certain situations. Just because he is tall does not mean that the Browns will run one of the last efficient plays in the football, the fade. Harris can use his size in other ways to make a play if necessary.
The Browns were able to find a younger and more effective blocking tight end in Demetrius Harris and continue to trend in the right direction.
