Browns should avoid Trent Williams

Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams is reportedly seeking a large contract after being traded and the Cleveland Browns should look elsewhere.

According to reports, Trent Williams wants a large contract after being traded. A contract somewhere in the $20 million per season range.

This is absolutely absurd. The Cleveland Browns should not engage Washington about a trade for Williams or even entertain the thought of paying him that much money.

This would make Trent Willams the highest paid player on the team. There is no reason to paying a soon to be 32-year old left tackle more than anyone else on the team. This is not even mentioning what the Redskins are seeking for Willams in trade. Some have mentioned that they want a high draft pick in return before having to renegotiate his contract. Essentially the team that acquires him has to pay a premium in order to pay him more. The Browns would be foolish to even consider this option.

Luckily a trade and contract of this type does not necessarily fit the philosophy of the current front office. Cleveland seems like they could consider drafting a tackle such as Mekhi Becton or Andrew Thomas. Combine one of those options with some moves in free agency and the team could be in business. Of course they actually have to spend some money on free agents that work with their process. Young lineman that actually make sense to sign to a contract that may be a bit more costly than others. Essentially not Trent Willams.

  1. Agree completely. There are so many reasons why a Trent Williams addition would be an enormous subtraction. U mentioned some. In addition, his tumors could return. It would be short term and we are back to seeking a LT next year. Berry, I truly believe, wants to set up his OL for the next 3 years with young or in prime players and have a dominate, youngish OL like Dallas has/had. CAP spent on Trent is CAP not spent on DEF free agents and on extensions for Garrett, Ward, Njoku et al. It would delay the development of a young LT CLE will draft at 10 and likely another T mid-late round or even a UDFA. Terrible idea to even consider.
