Browns select Isaiah Simmons in mock draft

In Ryan Wilson’s mock draft on CBS Sports, the Cleveland Browns bypass taking an offensive tackle and select linebacker Isaiah Simmons instead.

If this were to actually happen it might cause a riot. The Cleveland Browns ignoring their offensive line yet again and selecting a linebacker. Isaiah Simmons out of Clemson.

That is what Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports has happening in his latest mock draft. Here is the reasoning from Wilson for the selection.

It sounds like the Browns won’t re-sign Joe Schobert, and even though they drafted linebackers Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki, there’s still room for Simmons, who can line up anywhere, including safety, which is also a need for this Cleveland defense.

The reasoning is sound, I’ll give him that. Simmons could be a legit defensive player for years to come and Cleveland sure as hell needs one. In regards to production, he checks off a lot of those boxes as well. What Simmons presents could enamor those involved in the draft process. Although a problem still remains. The Browns offensive line.

Does Wilson expect Cleveland to spend big in free agency on their offensive line? Because it does not really seem like they will, it’s not their style. Sure there are options like Jack Conklin available, but it does not appear likely that the Browns will shell out the big bucks for him.

There is also the possibly that letting Joe Schobert walk in free agency paired with moving on from Christian Kirksey could make this move a necessity. But again, their offensive line is a disaster and there is no way they can come back with their current group as-is.
