The Cleveland Browns are moving on from offensive line coach James Campen. Campen was in Cleveland for only one season and doubled as an associate head coach for Freddie Kitchens.
Kevin Stefanski will be running a scheme that requires a certain type of blocking from the offensive line. This is not a scheme that Campen teaches. The decision to part ways makes sense. It allows Stefanski to bring in his own line coach and allow Campen to find a job elsewhere. With his experience and success he has experienced in his career he shouldn’t be out of work for long.
James Campen was brought over from Green Bay where he spent 2004-2018. The decision to bring Campen to Cleveland is definitely related to the fact that former general manager John Dorsey also spent a considerable amount of time in Green Bay. There was also the fact that Campen may not have been a match with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. Like Cleveland with Stefanski, Green Bay could have opted to let him pick his own staff instead of forcing a marriage between the two.
A continuing storyline for the Browns last season was the struggles of their offensive line. Only so much blame can be placed on the shoulders of Campen. The game plan was questionable at best, that is assuming there actually was some sort of game plan implemented that everyone understood. There is also the fact that only two offensive lineman are useful. Greg Robinson, Chris Hubbard, and the revolving door at right guard were absolutely dreadful. There is only so much that can be done coaching wise with a group that is near useless.
