Browns: Kevin Stefanski will still call plays in 2024

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski that he will be calling plays and not offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. Stefanski has been the offensive play-caller throughout his time as Cleveland’s head coach.

While this somehow came as a surprise to some, it shouldn’t. Stefanski was always going to call the plays, end of story. But somehow, people were too clouded by their own personal agendas to realize that. Too much stock was being placed in swapping out Alex Van Pelt for Dorsey, which resulted in believing that the latter would get the responsibilities the former never did. While Dorsey will still play a role in the offense, it is not as large as some imagined before now.

Is this the right decision for the Browns offense?

Even though Cleveland’s offense has been much more stable under Stefanski, there are times when his playcalling leaves something to be desired. A fresh set of eyes (Dorsey) could have provided the Browns offense with something that may have previously been overlooked/unnoticed.

There is one more thing to factor into the equation here. Quarterback play. Deshaun Watson has been incredibly underwhelming since coming to Cleveland, and that is a problem. There also seems to be somewhat of a compatibility issue between Watson and Stefanski. Far too often, the offense looks clunky and is not operating properly. While plenty dismisses this due to Watson only appearing in 12 games, Joe Flacco seemed to have absolutely zero problem running the offense last year, and that speaks volumes.

Patience continues to be preached by those who still believe that this quarterback-head coach tandem will work. An easy solution to further test that theory would have been to hand the reins of the offense over to Dorsey and see what comes of it. Instead, they will continue to try and force something that does not appear capable of delivering the desired results.
