The Cleveland Browns have options at the safety position in free agency, most notably former Chief Eric Berry and former Cardinal Tre Boston.
The Cleveland Browns have a vacancy at the safety position. This comes after Cleveland sent Jabrill Peppers to the New York Giants in the deal for Odell Beckham Jr. While they can address the position in the draft, signing a safety in free agency should still be a priority.
Of course the most obvious connection is former Chiefs safety Eric Berry. Berry was in Kansas City at the same time as current Browns general manager John Dorsey. While Dorsey did not draft Berry, there is still a connection between the two. The largest concern with Berry is health. Berry only appeared in three games over the past two seasons due to injuries. There is the possibility Berry could take a less expensive “prove-it” deal to build back his value for next season. This is something that Berry’s replacement in Kansas City (Tyrann Mathieu) did last season.
Another option for the Browns is former Cardinals safety Tre Boston. Again this is going back to a connection on the Browns staff. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was the head coach in Arizona last season and that could be an in for Cleveland to sign Boston. Boston could desire to reunite with his former head coach for the upcoming season. Wilks knows the strengths and weaknesses of Boston and that could make an impact on whether the Browns want to sign the five-year veteran.
Cleveland has two really good options that they could potentially sign. Tre Boston is a much younger safety than Eric Berry, but at their peaks Berry is the better player. It all depends on whether the Browns want to take a chance on a potential comeback season for Berry or invest longterm in Boston.
