Andre Drummond to stay with Cavs

Cleveland Cavaliers center Andre Drummond will pick up his player option worth $28.75 million for the upcoming 2020-21 season.

While the Cleveland Cavaliers will not be participating in the Bio-Dome down in Orlando, they did manage to make some news Tuesday. Center Andre Drummond will remain with the Cavs next season as he will pick up his player option.

Andre Drummond appeared on Tuesday’s Le Batard & Friends – STUpodity and stated that he plans to be in Cleveland next season. This is big news for the Cavs. Drummond’s status seemed to be up in the air since being acquired by Cleveland. The two-time all-star could have easily opted out and went elsewhere if he wanted to. Drummond remaining in Cleveland does impact two other players on the roster. Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson.

Love and Drummond are represented by the same agency and if one wanted out, both could have left. The fact that Drummond is opting in points to Love remaining with the Cavs for the time being. Thompson on the other hand is a different story. While Thompson has been productive in an off the bench role, Cleveland does seem to have too many big men for a league that is deemphasizing that type of player. In addition to Drummond, Love, and Thompson, the Cavs also have Larry Nance Jr. and Ante Zizic. Cleveland could very well let Thompson go in an effort to provide a bit more clarity when it comes to their big men. Although Thompson could return to the Cavs if they want to fully lean into having a roster full of big men.
