The recently acquired shortstop could be traded a second time this offseason.
Two tweets from Mike Puma of the New York Post provided a little bit of insight into the future of Amed Rosario in Cleveland. Puma tweeted Wednesday that Rosario could be traded by the Cleveland Baseball Club after being acquired in the deal that sent Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco to the Mets.
Puma added to his tweet from Wednesday with a follow up on Thursday, suggesting that the Cincinnati Reds could be a suitor.
With this surfacing right now it provides some clarification into why Cleveland re-signed Cesar Hernandez earlier this week. Cleveland has a logjam with Hernandez, Rosario, and Andres Gimenez on the roster. If Cleveland were to essentially flip Rosario it proves Gimenez a chance to play every day at shortstop with Hernandez manning second.
From Cleveland’s perspective this is a move that they should at least explore. They are in a time that is not rebuild or retool, but a reset. Cleveland is not a team that is realistic contender for the division or even the playoffs. As a club they are in a position to take a small step back in order to set up contending two or three years down the road. Moving Amed Rosario now helps that plan take shape a little bit more.
