Wide receiver Rashard Higgins is back with the Cleveland Browns after agreeing to a one-year vet minimum deal for $910,000.
A familiar face is back in Cleveland. Rashard Higgins is signing a one-year deal to remain with the Browns.
As ESPN’s Jake Trotter mentions, Higgins will compete for the third receiver position behind Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. Cleveland’s other options for this position include KhaDarel Hodge, Taywan Taylor, and Damion Ratley. If Higgins is everything that some would have you believe he is, he should win this job rather easily.
Mary Kay Cabot mentions that one motivating factor was that Higgins loves Baker Mayfield.
While loving a quarterback is something to consider for a wide receiver, one would think if there was an opportunity to make more money elsewhere that it would be entertained in some fashion. Especially considering the offense that Cleveland is about to use will be heavy on two tight end sets and he may not see the field as much when compared to a different offense. Going to a more wide open offense could have benefited Higgins not only from a performance standpoint, but a dollars standpoint. Instead Higgins is staying in Cleveland for the vet minimum hoping to build value.
Through the first four years of his career Rashard Higgins has had one productive season. His 2019 campaign was derailed. due to an injury and incompetent coaching. Although a letdown is not necessarily all that surprising considering his lone productive season the year prior.
Something worth considering with this deal is that Beckham and Landry both had offseason surgery. Even when activities resume it is doubtful that they will be participating. Having a receiver who is familiar with the quarterback will help when learning a brand new offense. Anything to help eliminate some obstacles that the Browns will face must be considered a win of sorts.
