The Cleveland Browns are supporting their head coach Freddie Kitchens even though their 2019 season has not gone as planned.
There is such a thing as supporting a head coach for the right reasons and supporting a head coach for the wrong reasons. Cleveland seems destined to support Freddie Kitchens for the wrong reasons. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Browns management is behind Kitchens even though the team has been inconsistent all year long. Rapoport also mentions that barring a series of losses, the expectation is for Freddie Kitchens to return.
There. That right there is where the Browns are going to go wrong with this. Instead of evaluating the entirety of the season they will make their decision over a select few games. The win-loss record is not what should be evaluated here. It is how the team has performed from start to finish that should dictate whether Freddie Kitchens remains employed or sent packing. Looking at that aspect there is no reason for him to remain employed. The Browns are still making very basic mistakes each and every game. How in the world are they still being called for illegal shift penalties this late in the season? Teams that are going in the right direction do not continue to make these same mistakes over and over again.
Evaluate the entire body of work. Not the final three games of the season. Over the entire season there have been plenty of mistakes from Kitchens, both on and off the field. Freddie Kitchens appears to be completely unaware of everything around him. That complete lack of awareness and attention to detail is why the Cleveland Browns are where they are right now.
If the Cleveland Browns ever want to get out of the basement of the AFC and actually contend for something, they need someone who will pay attention to detail. Someone who actually is aware of his surrounding and perhaps most importantly, is an adult in a room full of children.
