The Cleveland Browns have signed free agent wide receiver and former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller to a contract.
This is quite the curious roster move from John Dorsey and the Cleveland Browns. Braxton Miller has signed with Cleveland after being waived by the Philadelphia Eagles on August 17. The team announced the move Wednesday morning.
With how crowded the receiving corps for the Browns the signing was something that was not expected. While Cleveland already features Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, Rashard Higgins and Antonio Callaway. Any real playing time with the offense appears to not be in the cards.
Although Zac Jackson was quick to make a solid point.
Trying Braxton Miller as a returner is definitely a good idea. The current returners according to the Browns depth chart are Dontrell Hilliard, D’Ernest Johnson and Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi. Hilliard appears to be the backup running back while Kareem Hunt is suspended and Johnson should also get some work. Damon Sheehy-Giuseppi may not make the roster. Exploring other options is more than worth the resources to do so.
An electric return man can make a tremendous impact on the game. Players such as former Cleveland Brown Josh Cribbs can change the momentum of game in just one play.
As seen during his time at Ohio State, Miller is great in space. One of his more famous plays was a spin move against Virginia Tech. This was from the first game that Braxton Miller was not the quarterback for the Buckeyes.
Miller is quick, agile and can make would-be tacklers miss. If Cleveland can somehow utilize that in the return game it would be a game changer.
The Browns will probably give Miller the next two games to prove himself to see if he can make the roster. If he does, great. If not, that’s fine too. At worst Braxton Miller is an unknown that Cleveland can hopefully get something out of in a season when they expect to contend.
