Guardians sued by Guardians?

The recently named Cleveland Guardians baseball team is being sued by the Cleveland Guardians roller derby team.

The inevitable has finally come to the table. The Cleveland Guardians roller derby team is suing the Cleveland Guardians baseball team. This is in an attempt to prevent the baseball team from using the name.

This has been a long time coming since as soon as the name change was announced there was instant backlash in regards to the name being used. In addition to the pure obliviousness from the baseball team failing to recognize that the roller derby team exists, important aspects of a sports team such as social media profiles and a website were already taken. Some very questionable practices by the baseball team in order to keep people off their trail have drawn widely deserved criticism.

Even if the name change dispute is settled there is still the possibility their agreement for a lease extension is not approved. The agreement between that would keep the Guardians in Cleveland is waiting the approval at the city and county council level. This is in addition to a possible MLB lockout after the conclusion of the 2021 season. Baseball played at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario under any moniker may have to wait if a new CBA cannot be agreed to.

For now the focus will remain on the Guardians and well, the Guardians. While their time to fight on the field ended a long time ago, their fight in the courtroom appears to be just starting.
