The Cleveland Baseball Club lost their third straight game to the Seattle Mariners.
After losing two straight games to the Seattle Mariners, the Cleveland Baseball Club had a chance to split the series on Sunday. Things did not work out as Cleveland ended up losing their third straight game, this time by a score of 3-2.
It was an outing that was not sharp and subsequently short for Shane Bieber. Bieber only lasted 4.2 innings after allowing three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven. Bieber’s run of games with eight or more strikeouts comes to an end after this performance. Cleveland’s ace was simply not able to get the Mariners batters out at an effective rate which led to his high pitch count (103) in such a short amount of time. Phil Maton, Bryan Shaw, and Emmanuel Clase would pitch the remainder of the game only allowing baserunners on four walks.
Seattle’s pitching strategy was a bullpen approach and it was mostly effective. The Mariners used seven pitchers on the day with Robert Dugger and Paul Sewald handling the bulk of the innings (5). The only time that Cleveland was able to score was when Rafael Montero came in as he allowed two runs on two hits and one walk in just two-thirds of an inning. The only other time that Cleveland had a chance to score was in the 7th. Eddie Rosario controversially bunted to move the runners to second and third which led to an intentional walk of Jose Ramirez. Franmil Reyes would ground into a double play on the third pitch of his at-bat to end the threat and the inning.
Cleveland is now 21-17 on the year and is 2.5 games back of the division leading Chicago White Sox. The road trip for Cleveland continues as they will head to Los Angeles to take on the Angels for a three-game series.
