Cleveland rallies together to top Tigers

The Cleveland Baseball Club staged a four-run rally in the seventh inning to propel them to 9-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Early on it seemed like the Cleveland Baseball Club was headed for another defeat. The Detroit Tigers held a 3-1 lead in the 3rd inning and the Cleveland bats were just not putting anything together, that all changed in the 7th inning.

It was now a 3-2 game after Eddie Rosario drove in a run on groundout in the previous inning and Cleveland was looking to rally. Amed Rosario got things started with a leadoff single, only to be followed up by a Josh Naylor ground rule double. Yu Chang stepped up to the plate and drove in both runners to give Cleveland a 4-3 lead.

After an Austin Hedges flyout, Jordan Luplow stepped up to the plate looking to do some damage. Luplow promptly launched at two-run homer to extend the Cleveland lead to three for his first hit of the season.

Cleveland’s offense was not done as they kept scoring in the 8th inning. Franmil Reyes came up to the plate after Eddie Rosario reached on a walk. Reyes hit his first home run of the season to make it a 8-3 lead for Cleveland.

Feeling left out as the only Cleveland starter yet to score a run, Austin Hedges blasted a solo home run of his own in the 9th.

On the bump

Aaron Civale was Cleveland’s starter and was fairly impressive on the day. Civale allowed 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking 6 over 7 innings. The only two hits allowed by Civale were home runs to Nomar Mazara (two-run) and Akil Baddoo (solo). After Baddoo’s homer in the 3rd Detroit would not register another hit with Civale on the mound.

Cal Quantrill took over pitching duties in the 8th and struck out two of the three Tigers batters he faced on 12 pitches.

Emmanuel Clase made his first appearance in a Cleveland uniform and things went as expected. Clase shut down the 9th and struck out one batter to secure the victory.

Cleveland returns to Progressive Field Monday for their home opener against the Kansas City Royals.
