Browns agree to deal with Taven Bryan

After a mostly silent first day of the legal tampering period, the Cleveland Browns have agreed to terms on a deal with Taven Bryan. The deal can pay Bryan up to $5 million.

A first round disappointment, Taven Bryan simply has not been able to be much of anything in the NFL. While the athletic traits have been touted by many, they simply have not translated into being relevant beyond college. Bryan has just 86 total tackles and 5.5 sacks in 63 games (17 starts), so any hope that he is some type of factor with interior pressure can be disregarded entirely.

In his four seasons, Taven Bryan has never played more than 46% of defensive snaps, meaning that Cleveland still needs to add at the defensive tackle position after the departures of Malik McDowell and Malik Jackson. Although some are grasping at straws in drawing comparisons to last seasons signing of Takk McKinley, McKinley at least was able to accumulate 13 sacks in his first two seasons, leading to hope that a change of scenery and role in Cleveland could unlock his potential (ultimately it did not work out). The signing of Bryan can be considered something of a nothing-burger, move along and wait until they sign or draft someone of substance.

Trevor Story on Guardians radar

Of all the teams pursuing free agent shortstop Trevor Story, the Cleveland Guardians are the most surprising. The Yankees, Cardinals, and Astros seem to be more likely landing spots if they finish as also-rans in the Carlos Correa sweepstakes.

Trevor Story possess the ability to hit for power and steal bases, a combination that is becoming less and less common. Story has 266 home runs and 100 stolen bases in six seasons, totaling 20 or more stolen bases in three of the last four seasons. The only season that Story did not reach at least 24 home runs was the 60 game season in 2020, which still saw Story lead the league in stolen bases (15) and triples (4).

Without even mentioning the financial aspect of it, because that will play a major factor, Cleveland already has a plethora of middle infielders in their organization. While none of them currently possess the ability of Trevor Story, moves would be required in order to accommodate this signing. Also, in order to maximize their roster, trades of middle infielders would be necessary in order to upgrade other positions.

While it does not seem incredibly likely that the Guardians end up with Trevor Story, at least showing interest is a sign that the team is looking to shed their cost and risk averse label. Whether that happens is a completely different story entirely.

Guardians “in the mix” for Matt Olson

A big time move for the Cleveland Guardians could be on the horizon. Cleveland is one of multiple teams keeping tabs on Oakland’s Matt Olson per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Matt Olson would be a big time addition for the first base needy Guardians. Currently Cleveland has Bobby Bradley at first, a less than intriguing option that has predictably struggled at the MLB level. Olson has plenty of power and the ability to hit at a much better clip than some of the non-Carlos Santana options that have been trotted out in recent years. Olson’s career slash line is .252/.348/.511 with 142 home runs and 373 RBI in 575 games. 2021 saw Olson finish with career-highs in home runs (39), RBI (111), walks (88), and slash line (.271/.371/.540).

Currently Olson has one more year of arbitration after 2022, but that should not be something that precludes Cleveland from getting involved in trade talks. The Guardians are not spending heavy on any player currently, taking on Olson’s salary is more than doable.

Trey Fix-Wolansky assigned to Cleveland

The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced they have assigned Trey Fix-Wolansky to the Cleveland Monsters. Fix-Wolansky returns to the AHL after just over four minutes of ice time in Sunday’s win over Vegas.

Trey Fix-Wolansky has appeared in six games with Columbus this season, with one goal and one assist during the time. Cleveland is where Fix-Wolansky spends most of his time, with 11 goals and assists in 32 games for the Monsters this season.

Browns release Jarvis Landry

After failing to facilitate a trade or agree to a restructured contract, the Cleveland Browns are releasing Jarvis Landry. The team granted Landry permission to seek a trade after acquiring Amari Cooper, but will release the receiver at the onset of the legal tampering period.

The release of Jarvis Landry is hardly surprising considering his cap hit for 2021 was more than $16 million. Cleveland will save just over $15 million with the move and carry a dead cap hit of just $1.5 million for 2022. Landry will finish his Browns tenure with 288 receptions for 3,560 yards and 15 touchdowns in four seasons.
