Recent struggles of Collin Sexton

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Collin Sexton has struggled with some poor shooting performances over the last 10 games.

Dating back to December 18th Collin Sexton has struggled offensively. In the 10 game span Sexton is only converting 33.3 percent of his shots from the field. The best single game performance was in the lone victory in that span against the Indiana Pacers. Sexton went 6-13 from the field and scored 12 points in the contest. This mark is nearly eight percent worse than his season average of 41.7.

Shooting from deep has also been a tough task. Sexton is shooting an uninspiring 34.6 percent from beyond the arc during this recent slide. Sexton’s best night from three-point range occurred in a 26 point loss to the Utah Jazz. The now 20-year old rookie made three of four attempts that evening, but shot 3-13 overall ending with 13 points overall.

While Sexton has improved his three-point shooting over the last three games, he is still inconsistent in that regard. The 53.8 conversion rate in January is encouraging but considering his season average is only at 38.8 percent a correction is coming.

Shooting is not the only concern with Collin Sexton

The other concern is that Collin Sexton is only averaging 3.3 assists over this span. While there have been two games where Sexton has tallied six assists, Sexton has only cracked the three assist barrier one other time. While some of this is due to the lack of reliable shooters on the floor, the other factor is Sexton making rookie mistakes. Often times making poor passes or not finding open teammates. Eventually this should correct itself, but for now the struggles appear likely to continue.

Collin Sexton has had some moments this season where he has looked great, but it has not occurred in quite some time. Patience will be key in his development. Sexton will improve with more time and show the occasional flash that led to the Cavaliers selecting him with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.
