Indians back Bieber in shutout of Orioles

Cleveland Indians pitcher Shane Bieber threw his first career complete game shutout and the Indians offense score more than enough to secure the win.

It is safe to say that Shane Bieber will be “King of the Hill” after this series. If you are unfamiliar with this award, it is given to the Indians pitcher who pitches the best during a given series. Bieber’s complete game shutout of the Orioles Sunday should secure the award. Bieber struck out 15 Orioles and did not walk a single batter. Shane Bieber is the first Cleveland pitcher to do so since Luis Tiant in 1968 per Jeremy Frank aka MLBRandomStats.

The only question in regards to Bieber’s performance was if Tito was going to let him go all the way. Luckily Tito gave him the go ahead and let him finish off his masterpiece. Bieber threw 107 pitches on the day, 75 of which were strikes. This was a much improved performance compared to his last start where he surrendered four home runs to the Chicago White Sox. It is safe to say Bieber enjoyed himself much more today.

The Indians offense also held up their end of the deal, scoring 10 runs en route to a series victory. Carlos Santana led the offense, going 2-4 with a home run and two runs driven in. Carlos Gonzalez drove in a run in the first with a sacrifice fly. Oscar Mercado drove in his first career run with a double in the sixth inning. Mike Freeman drove in the final two runs of the game with a double in the eighth.

In addition to the traditional way of driving in runs, Cleveland also scored in other ways. Roberto Perez scored on a passed ball in the second. Gonzalez scored in the third on a groundout from Perez. Mercado was able to score in the sixth due to a throwing error. Francisco Lindor would score when Jose Ramirez drew a bases loaded walk in the sixth.

Cleveland will now take on the Oakland Athletics in a three game series starting Monday.
