Collin Sexton

Collin Sexton co-favorite for Rookie of the Year

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Collin Sexton has been voted as the co-favorite for the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. DeAndre Ayton of the Phoenix Suns is the other co-favorite. The survey consisted of Sexton and Ayton’s peers.

The Cavaliers selected Collin Sexton with the eighth pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Sexton played one season at Alabama before entering the draft. The Alabama product averaged 19.2 PPG, 3.6 APG and 3.8 RPG on 44.7 percent from the field including 33.6 percent from deep.

Can Collin Sexton actually win Rookie of the Year?

Collin Sexton
Cavaliers rookie Collin Sexton may have to come off the bench at first. Eventually Sexton should take over the starting point guard position.

It certainly is possible but a number of things must occur before it can happen. George Hill is on the roster and Cleveland may decide to go with the veteran until the rookie is ready to go. The other obstacle could be that the team hopes to compete. The current roster construction points toward an attempt to compete rather than tear the roster down. This could mean that Sexton may come off the bench with Hill holding onto the starting role.

If the Cavaliers play well with Hill as the starter Sexton may not get starting minutes. Sexton will contribute and may play a sizable amount of minutes in this scenario but not starter minutes. Even if Sexton is not the starter winning the award is not out of the question.

Of course this is considering that the Cavaliers do not move Hill early on in the season. If Hill is dealt Sexton will have ample opportunities early and often to display his ability. If this does occur Sexton has an excellent chance to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

Whether Sexton is a starter or comes off the bench Sexton should have a good shot at winning NBA Rookie of the Year.
