Cleveland unable to complete sweep of Mariners

The Cleveland Baseball Club was not able to complete the sweep of the Seattle Mariners, losing by a score of 6-2 Sunday afternoon.

A combination of a rare shaky start from Shane Bieber and only five hits led to the Cleveland Baseball Club unable to complete the sweep of the visiting Seattle Mariners. Seattle totaled 13 hits and walked three times as they handled Cleveland a 6-2 loss Sunday.

It was not a great outing for Shane Bieber as he simply was not fooling any of Seattle’s hitters. Bieber gave up five runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out eight. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner was able to last 5.2 innings after it looked like he might be headed for an early exit. This was by far the worst start of the season as this was the most hits and runs allowed by Bieber this season. It is also only the third time this season that Bieber did not make it at least six innings.

Bryan Shaw and Trevor Stephan handled the final 3.1 innings of the game. Shaw allowed one base runner via a base on balls while Stephan allowed 1 run on three hits.

Offensively there were a couple of players who left a lot to be desired at the plate. Cesar Hernandez, Jose Ramirez, Josh Naylor, Austin Hedges, and Bradley Zimmer combined to go 0-17 with six strikeouts. This simply cannot happen if Cleveland is going to win games and be competitive in some capacity this season.

Cleveland continues their home stand on Monday as they host the Baltimore Orioles. It will be the first of a four game series between the two clubs . This is a chance to avenge the ugly 18-5 loss last weekend in Baltimore. Perhaps Cleveland can return the favor to their guests from the American League East.
