Cavaliers waive Patrick McCaw, sign Cameron Payne

The Cleveland Cavaliers waived Patrick McCaw Sunday after only three games.

Well that was brief. Three games into Patrick McCaw’s Cavaliers career the team has decided to waive him. Shams Charania of The Athletic broke the news Sunday evening.

In McCaw’s short tenure with the Cavaliers he failed to shoot consistently. In 17.7 minutes per game McCaw only managed to score 1.7 points per game while only making 22.2 percent of his shots. Not a whole lot was expected in regards to immediate results from McCaw. This was McCaw’s first game action since last postseason.

It appears Cleveland may have chose to waive McCaw due to his contract becoming guaranteed on January 7th. Apparently McCaw did not perform well enough to warrant keeping him around. Going off his numbers in his 53 minutes of time on the court this appears to be accurate.

Cleveland may bring McCaw back if he does indeed clear waivers, which many expect to be the case. The issue with that is McCaw will be free to sign with any team and may choose to sign with a contender instead of a struggling Cavaliers team. Charania also reported several contending teams are interested in McCaw’s services which could leave Cleveland on the outside looking in.

In a corresponding move Cleveland signed former Thunder and Bulls point guard Cameron Payne to a 10-day contract. Charania also reported this roster move.

With injuries hitting Cleveland hard they needed another point guard. At this point in time Collin Sexton is the only healthy point guard on the roster. Payne is their temporary solution until Matthew Dellavedova returns. The former 14th overall pick has struggled thus far in his career and it would be surprising if he remains in a Cavaliers uniform for an extended period of time.
