Cleveland will use Cal Quantrill, bullpen Tuesday

Cal Quantrill will start for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they are prepared for a bullpen game against the Chicago White Sox.

Originally Shane Bieber was supposed to start Tuesday for the Cleveland Baseball Club on Tuesday, but that is no longer the case. Sandy Alomar told the media after Monday’s game that it will be Cal Quantrill and the bullpen that will handle pitching duties on Tuesday.

Cal Quantrill has only faced one White Sox batter before, Jarrod Dyson. Dyson is 0-4 with a walk against Quantrill, so that’s something to point towards as a positive. Quantrill has appeared in 16 games this season and has a 2.52 ERA, 1.320, and 9 K/9. These numbers have changed a little bit since coming to Cleveland in a midseason trade. With Cleveland Quantrill has a 2.35 ERA, 1.304 WHIP, and 8.2 K/9. While Quantrill has seen a drop in his strikeout rate, his ERA and WHIP have slightly improved.

Reynaldo Lopez will be starting for Chicago and that is bad news for the Cleveland hitters. Lopez has shut down the majority of Cleveland’s bats in the past and could very well do that again. Cleveland is slashing .136/.196/.196/.392 in 81 at-bats against Lopez, this is also known as not great.

Notable Cleveland hitters who have struggled against Reynaldo Lopez in the past:

  • Delino DeSheilds: 0-9 with 5 strikeouts
  • Francisco Lindor: 2-13 with 1 home run
  • Jordan Luplow: 0-3, all strikeouts
  • Oscar Mercado: 0-3 with 1 strikeout
  • Roberto Perez: 0-3 with 2 strikeouts
  • Jose Ramirez: 3-13 with 1 home run
  • Franmil Reyes: 0-4 with 3 strikeouts
  • Carlos Santana: 3-13 with 1 strikeout

There is one player with an encouraging history with more than just a couple of at-bats against Reynaldo Lopez, Tyler Naquin. Naquin is 3-7 with 1 doubles and 3 RBI. Not the largest sample size or greatest performance, but compared to everyone else this is noteworthy. Cleveland will need the batters to be more like Tyler Naquin and less like Delino DeShields on Tuesday if they are to come out with a win.

The game is scheduled to start at 6:10 P.M.
